Trying to Control a Preamp via MIDI from HX Stomp XL – Is It Enough or Do I Need HX Effects?

Hello!

Could I use a preamp pedal like friedman ir-x ( actually i have mothership tsakalis with the same functions ) together with an HX Stomp XL and send MIDI signals from it—at least to change the preamp’s channel—while also having specific presets on the Stomp with their own effect chains?

For example, one preset with comp and reverb, another with comp, drive, reverb, delay, etc.?

Or do I need the HX Effects to do that?

Thank you!

HXSXL will do what you want.

The ir-x doesn't do much via MIDI, just stores 128 PRESETS which contain settings for Channel (1/2), Boost (ON/OFF), FX Loop (ON/OFF), IR, Presence and Thump.

These cannot (AFAICT) be accessed separately, so the only messages you'll be sending are PRESET (128) calls (PC#).

The HXSXL has 128 presets, each of which can be set to send (on LOAD) either the default PC# (0-127) or any PC# in that range.

Each HXSXL Preset has 4 SNAPSHOTS, each of which can send a different PC#.

That means that without changing the HXSL Preset (which causes a momentary audio gap) you can switch among 4 ir-x presets.

The ir-x manual does not specify if internal preset switching is gapless.

That's about it for MIDI control of the ir-x. Not much, but combined with the HXSXL, pretty powerful.
