sirhc
Hi, What is the best practice to find a good cab / mic / micplacement combo? I would like to set a mic at a reasonalbel position (for me normally something like middle between cone/edge, distance ~3, not angelged. Than I would like to switch cabs... However, each switch changes mic and placement... This is stopping my planned workflow. What is the reason for this behaviour? Does it make sense and I miss something? How do you proceed? I am 100% happy, when playing with a power amp and real cab with cab in the room sound. But I am still looking for a good method to set up cab simulation (although I made some progress yesterday). Any hints?
bbehrens
Hmmm, sounds like a challenge and one that I would routinely do for all sorts of changes in a preset/snapshots. In the Helix. I would set up the same Preset but with a different name. It used to not matter as I could do it at any time anywhere with Helix. But now with Stadium, you can only do it in the master set list (USER or whatever you want to call it that is NOT a Folder). The you need to make a new version (used to be called a copy) of a preset (Don't worry because Stadium will append something to the name because it gets confused over Presets with the same name. And then make changes to the COPY of the Preset. You can't really do an A/B comparison easily. But it is a lot easier (and you are not likely to lose your changes) using this method. You just have to decide which version of the preset you like better and if you want to keep the old version as a reference or for other changes. On a side note: I have only tried the DEMO of Stadium Native, but I saw a little A==>B button that looked like it might be a A/B comparison like some DAW plug-ins have. This would be very cool and very useful. But I wonder how Stadium Native will use the same file for a specific Preset name like Stadium does. Sorry, I still can't get used to that as it disrupts my workflow. I will adapt, like I have so far in editing Stadium presets.
dandesy
It *seems* to me like your workflow is the issue. correct me if I’m wrong, but it sounds as if you’re assuming that a given mic at a given distance will work perfectly for all cabs and that switching the cab with your preferred mic should give you the best result. I think that’s the wrong approach since every cab/mic combination is different. And cabs sound great with a ribbon mic, others not. So I think it’s wiser/more to the point to audition the cabs (as spec’ed by line 6), and when you hear something your like, or in the ballpark, then you can play with the mic and placement. sirhc
In think, I got what you are speaking of... however,to my ears, mic placements changes sounds - sometimes even more than the cab itself... And some placements I never like... (Cone, close)... I think to understand the cab sound, for me it would help to go through with a standard mic setting... Should not be too hard to implement ("lock mic"-button)... That's why I wonder, if I miss something?
dandesy
I don’t think you missed anything. You are correct that mics and placement can make or break your tone. But so does cab selection. And Helix is cab centric I suppose. a mic lock feature might be a good idea. You should submit a request to line 6.
