JTV - Different Sound VDI/POD vs Regular Cable?

Hello - I'm wondering if anyone else has observed this. I've been struggling to get the tones I want from my JTV-69, via the VDI cable and a POD 500HD, and last night I simply plugged the JTV directly into my amp, using a regular 1/4 inch guitar cable. I noticed a distinct improvement in the basic guitar tones, across all electric models. So I switched back to the 500HD, this time with no 1/4 inch cable, but the VDI. I selected a "New Tone" - blank - patch, and I noticed, no matter how I set up the POD (Studio/Direct, Preamp, etc) that the guitar tone was flatter, thinner, anemic almost. Can Line6 explain this? Is something happening at the D2A conversion for the 1/4 inch output that is not happening when the signal goes to VDI?

My problem is that I LIKE the 1/4 inch tone, and I spend way too much of my time trying to overcome the awful VDI signal in the POD, which is obviously do-able, but (IMO) should be unneccesary. Note: I am not talking about the MAGNETIC mode on the JTV, but the MODELED modes. About the only guitar models that sound better through the VDI and POD, IMO, are the ACOUSTIC and RESO models, with the possible exception of the Danelectro.

Thanks, Larry

POD HD500 & L3T Combo

So now the 2.1 upgrade lists the following:

"POD HD500 and POD HD Pro now integrate with StageSource loudspeakers. Musicians can instantly recall StageSource Smart Speaker modes via POD HD presets, making StageSource and POD HD500 or HD Pro an integrated FRFR (Full Range Flat Response) guitar system."

I am considering a purchase of the HD500 but I'm still unsure about the very best way to amplify the output.

Currently I'm running a desktop pod (bean) through a Fender Frontman. The problem with this is that when I turn up the volume, the tonality changes because the speaker begins to "warp" when pushed. So perfected living room tones sound more compressed and mid-rangey when pushed to performance levels. Tweaking has somewhat improved the performance level sound, but still it's not as good as low-level volume tonality. So the bottom line is that I really don't feel that running the POD HD500 through another amplifier is the best way to amplify the output the most accurately.

I am already aware of running directly to the soundboard, but that can wind up being a disaster if the person running the sound is tweaking your tone differently than the way you would like.

So now along comes the L3T which has enormous power-handling output (stated as: "Powerful 1,400-watt, Three-way Design").

Furthermore it is now considered a "Full Range Flat Response guitar system".

Does this mean that the sound will stay relatively the same whether it's pushing 5 watts or 60 watts? Will the frequency response curve alter as the sound level is pushed up?

I'm just curious as to how other players are experiencing this combination.

Thanks for any response on this.

HD500 - what do you use for solo boost?

I'm getting some great sounds out of my HD500 but I'm missing the solo boost feature of my old Spider Valve MKII. I've tried using an EQ as a volume boost after the amp model but this does change the tone a little. I prefer to use exp1 as a volume pedal with it being 0% full back, 100% fully forward and a separate pedal to boos the volume for solo's. I like being able to mute the guitar with the pedal, and I also like being able to use the Wah at my regular volume as well as my boosted volume.

So any ideas? Or am I missing something dead obvious?

Cheers

Phil

Is it possible to mute the HD500 inputs without muting USB audio?

I use my hD500 as a USB interface, connected directly to a pair of active monitors. Because of the position of the HD500 under a desk, I tend to always leave the 'guitar in' cable plugged into the back of the unit.

So, when I'm not using it for guitar (either tinkering with Ableton or possibly just listening to music while doing something else), I'd like to be able to completely mute the inputs so I don't get any hum from having the guitar cable terminate with a loose plug on the floor. I thought I'd be able to do this by setting the tuner to 'mute' and using the tuner like a mute switch, but unfortunately this also mutes the USB audio, which I thought was a bit odd.

So anyway, is there a way to completely mute the inputs without killing the USB audio?

Thanks.

P.S.
