Don't give up. I've been learning how to play guitar and use the HD500 (not with a Variax) for quite a while and it's just staritng to pay off for me privately speaking. I started out with a Toneport GX then went to a UX2 with an inexpensive Strat copy (which I had to learn how to set-up) and a Spider III 15 amp. After getting aquainted with those I went big (IMO) and got the X3 Pro, Spider Jam Amp, and a Spider III 75 Amp in order to make use of the dual tone effects. Working with these things for short spurts of times made it easier for me to build good habits and learn. I'm still learning and am always learning. I figured buying this eqiptment would keep me busy for the rest of my life, lol. Now I have all these peices of eqiptment and possibilities. I'm always trying different configurations just to learn more ways to hook-up. Just recently I been using the Mobile IN piping it into the various inputs on the Spider Jam and WOW it does offer some good tone. Using the EQ, Rotary, and Flanger #1 after the line 6 clean amp and the clean setting, delay and reverb effect on the Spider Jam I played with that for hours.

I always have to Thank Line 6 for keeping my brain sharp. People around me are really happy with the sounds that come out of their equiptment. I even had a neighbor say they turn their TV off just to listen to me play, all the time, LOL. That was really cool 'cause I always wondered what they thought, subconciously.

Don't give up, keep an open mind and learning will come easier. Be patient when you think you might have a hardware problem and ask someone by way of forum or phone call.

Hummelong said: Every one of these pieces of gear has required HOURS of learning and tinkering, but generally because of the immense power in these devices. Definitely worth the effort expended! Keep trying and I think you will be rewarded.

AMEN to that!!

I finally got a Mobile In.....

I'm gonna make this short and sweet. I got it, plugged it into (iPad, iPhone 4s), and it works for fine. So far I've been using a Burswood Strat (improved). I ran a 1/8 splitter into a Spider Jam CD jack and a Vaio laptop (for recording), and it worked fine. The only thing I wish I had is a short 30 pin cable (that works) so that I don't have to remove the cases from the iPad and iPhone.

I like the different tones I get from it. Also I'm gonna be using the Jammit app for sure.

My question would be is there a short 30 pin cable that works with this device? If not will there be one in the future?

I want to thank Line 6 for making some very cool equiptment. I have enjoyed everything I have that is Line 6.

I have alot of Line 6 stuff (Spider Jam, Spider 15, Spider III 75, LD300, TonePort GX, UX2, Pod X3Pro, and an HD500). Love all them. I bought them for what they were at that time. I'm Happy. You can also just run Gearbox(UX2) into AUX on HD500, sure there are other ways also. I've also re-amped using Gearbox to record HD500 out of my SpiderJam. Works good for me but I'm no expert musician just play here at home.

Use the hardgate first in chain and try to adjust the "open" knob. Then adjust the "close" knob. Play with these adjustments till you get the hang of it. You could also try to set-up 1 hardgate then add another after and see how that works. Or you may have to adjust your other effects to clean it up a bit. Like trying to lower the outputs a bit.
