Your advice is sound I'm sure, but your response to PremiumJones is a little odd. e.g. one could easily say "thats why there is a "line" output setting.

Anyway, I retract my previous assertion that I may not be able to provide a 'best' suggestion, as given the options now listed, I think the best idea is to try both, and see works best for the OP.

Well...... yeah. I mean I guess I cant lose by asking... and I certainly dont want to appear ungrateful for any advice intended to help my situation. But I just cant see them wanting to facilitiate me working on my own hardware.. warranty or no warranty. I mean if they provide part, then somehow I managed to electrocute myself on the HD afterwards, it wouldnt look so good that they assisted / supported my tinkering with the unit.

But as I said, nothing to lose, so I'll drop them a line later.

Appreciatte that (though I had seen that thread, and a few others on the topic). Sadly it looks like the whole board will have to come out (not a suprise I guess, but I had hoped for some sort of daughter board for the I/O.)

When I get time (though it wont be for a few days alas) I intend to dig around some of my redundant equipment and see if I have any ISB B ports with the same specs laying around. Though I guess I'd only really want to use a 2nd hand one if I can extract it cleanly as not worth fudging it for the price of a new port.

I havent tried the midi approach. Its a good thought, but given that the Edit software seems to require an actual identification of the HD I am sadly pessimistic. Worth a shot though (Indeed I hope I am wrong, as I can actually live without the audio if necessay, as I have a few other choices for that.)

That sucks and blows. I'm really dissapointed for you that they actually made you pay for this problem. I realise that I have purchsed mine in such a way that I shouldnt (and indeed do not) expect cover for this issue, but I truly remain convinced this is a genuine fault... it just happens to damned often. As such, I feel strongly that situations such as yours should be covered. I know that we are all - in the main - happy with our HD's but this is just wrong, and will certainly make me think again when considering any future Line 6 purchases. (in fact I am already crossing a variax off my wish list..... though that wasnt too much or a wrench as I neaither needed one, nor am really good enough to justify one.. I just wanted one).

In light of spaceatl and your comments I have just re-checked my connection is working (with the delecately balanced cable in situ).. powered down, waited an hour to be 100% sure of no remaining capacitance in the system, and taken the cable out until I can freplace the socket.

I hope I make a better job of it (or at least get a better socket) than line 6 did.

If I were you I'd consider taking the unit in then if you have any more dropouts such as those you have experienced so far. Sounds very odd to me.

I couldnt comment upon your "best" option, but going into the cd/mp3 input with the HD set at line level should work ok.

Although I am repeating the responses already provided, I think there is a point to take on board here that may still be a little less clear than it could be.

Simply put, PCI bus devices (all being equal) have superior potential performance compared to USB. This all became a little blurred because after the initial use of USB 'pre-ASIO' where some 'adequate in some situations' latency was the norm. After the release of ASIO, and other improved USB drivers, coupled with the integration of USB audio capability of external devices meant the whole USB audio thing could be pushed at a more 'pro' level.

Whilst it was never specifically stated, this momentum seemed to carry the inferrence that it was all better than existing PCI devices, which of course, was not the case.

Sorry youve had no assistance so far.

However, could you paerhaps expand upon your meaning when you say "cannot get stereo output".

for example, are you saying you are only getting output from one channel?, or perhaps that you are saying you are not getting a stereo 'effect' where you expect one.

Either way, a little more description may assist in getting your answer.

Apreciatted, and valid advice indeed.

Due to my lack of warranty I feel the most likely action is for me to replace the socket myself. (Im not professing to be an expert but I do have some experience with similar electronics having assembled a few 'kit based' projects.) Though this will depend upon the location and exact nature of the internal element of the socket. Again, I realise this is not a reccomended action.

The current 'balancing act' is only temporary, and although I felt confident the pins would not be shorted, your post has rather reminded me that although I always boot up 'Edit' when I use my POD, for the last couple of weeks I have focussing on actual practice rather than tone hunting. As such I'll probably whip the cable back out until I get a chance to look at it more closely.
