Recently they have packaged all their software to be used by computer (software samplers). Anyway, if you have a guitar that triggers midi signals (say a Roland Hex PU into one of the VG units- you can trigger really any midi keyboard or sampler). This way you could conceivably get the sound of any instrument on earth (including nylon guitars) from the comfort of your favorite electric guitar.

The possibilities are endless. MerlinFl on this site does this with his 2 JTVs. Send him a message if you are interested in this direction,but... Listen to your heart...choose what you really would like. Its that simple. Play your heart out,and by all means- have fun! I will try my best to return it in kind...I think it would be more than worth trying another JTV. Obviously, you got a lemon. And, it is true there are a lot of horror stories about new JTVs in this very site. But please keep in mind many of the posters are here to complain about problems or get ideas about fixing things that have gone wrong. You have to realize that the vast majority of us have no problems with our JTVs and they sound fine, play well and are for the most part, problem free.

I had the Variax 700 and I really liked it. The Line 6 models were and are quite good, but the JTV guitars are much better. They look better, they play better and IMO sound better...You are getting a single cutaway 2 humbucker guitar which plays and sounds very much like a Les Paul and you are paying half the price and it certainly looks as good if not better than a Les Paul standard plus top. (which costs ~$2,500 new) And, you get an additional 25 guitars- pretty much the history of electric and acoustic guitars from a guitar Hall of Fame and a banjo and a Coral Sitar, resonators etc.! And, you can set up individual tunings for each if you like and have instant access to any of them with Pod HD 500 (with 512 individualized tunings with your selected instrument, pick-up positions, amp/cabinets with settings and really world class effects set any where you like in the signal chain + programmable Efx loops you can put before or after the amp(s) wherever you choose so that you can still use your favorite foot pedals in the signal chain- when and if you so choose. The whole deal all from one footswitch press from the HD500. (notice I have not even mentioned what this button press can also do with DT amps...don't even get me stqrted on that)

What...are you nuts? A JTV guitar if all is working as it should- feels, sounds and plays as well as a Les Paul. The models are quite accurate. People can't tell that you are playing a modelling guitar in a live mix, or recorded (unless people are watching you closely and realize that perfect Strat or Tele sound could not be coming from a Les Paul). The Paul models are pretty dead-on too.And you can swap out pickups in Workbench to your hearts content. Really man, are you kidding? this is not even a fair comparison... And it is a fine guitar on its own just with the mag pickups..A Fine .Axe,really!

Roland products. I like them too. I had the original VG8 COSM modelling processor with GK pickup and I moved on the the VG88. I liked the models but not nearly as much as I like the Line 6 models. I don't think they really improved their models much with the VG99 or the GR55 but the housings are smaller have more expressive controllers and the GR55 adds synth tones which is nice. Also the Rolands all have full Midi implementation if you want to go out to other ~rackmount synths, samplers,Efx etc. But I think Line 6's guitar models are more accurate/ sound better. And the instant recall of any of their models with potentially 512 tunings if you were that motivated is the clincher

The more I think about this...I realize your question seems silly to me. I am not putting you down. Just think about all a normal functioning JTV can do, then with a Pod HD500...This is not a fair comparison, nor is this really a useful question by you. A better question would be...How long until my new JTV comes and can I afford an HD500 now? Or,(What am I willing to trade in towards getting one)! Sorry I did not even get around to the Acoustics and what you can do to get the best tone with them. Ask again about that if you are still interested. From what it looks like from here, man,,,

Enjoy your New JTV and don't second guess yourself. You won't regret this decision!

Highest regards from many satisfied JTV owners.

Funky

Hi PCEP,

I've been enjoying your thread. Very positive, really what the JTV is all about. It's funny that most people are here to complain! Anyway, I really like what you have to say and your criticisms are accurate. Alot of people have noticed artificial sounds with the 12 strings (frequently noticing artifacts in the harmonics). I think line 6 did a really thorough and good job on the models including the 12 electric and acoustic strings. May I suggest the solution is not to tinker in Workbench, but to adjust the JTV's string height just a tad higher. See if that does not improve the models. If you notice artifacts or strange harmonics just adjust it back to where you had it or slightly lower in height next. I think this will solve your problem,,,

If the string height is right- ALL the models should sound good,,. In fact they should sound Great just like the instruments they are modelling,. Line 6 really nailed it.,, In a band mix or in a recording, very few discerning ears can even suspect that you are doing this with a modelling guitar!

I don't think you'll have any problem with your pedals if you get an HD500. It has programmable EFX loops that you can put anywhere you like in the signal chain. So, Wah's, OD,distortions, Fuzz you can put before amps and Modulations, Delay and reverbs you could put after if you like and keep any of the pedals you want to continue using. Line 6 has ~96 effects on board to choose from. many of them are excellent, ultra programmable, and may replace a few of your pedals. So even less to carry around. Sounds like you'll be bringing~ 3 less instruments with you already! I love my Electro Harmonix Black Finger (tube compressor), the Radial Tonebone Classic (tube distortion), TC Chorus and the EH Deluxe Memory Man (Delay),... So I can keep them in my signal chain thru the EFX loops at will for any given preset, Oh yeah, and the Eventide Pitch Factor (harmonizer).

I'm a strat guy, Not surprising that I have a few strats at home. I find the strat model that Line 6 chose sounds as good if not better than some of my Customshop strats! The sound is really good. I only miss the 'feeling' of the fretboard/ neck on some of them- that's what I notice but the sound is terrific. they nailed a perfect stratocaster!

Good luck with your JTV69, the band and in your recording. Lots of JTV owners are cheering you on, Have Fun and Enjoy,,,

DrFunk

Thank You Sean!

This is practically like Christmas- I could not have asked for more! Very kind of you to spend a little of your time on a "Tone-Thread" for us... I am really pleased with my electric sounds JTV> HD500> Line 6 link R to DT25 and L main out to Spider Valve Mk2,combo power amp in. But please anything you want to give us concerning electric tones and Dream Rig would be eaten up here. I am really impressed with your acoustic tone from the JTV. .Are you going direct to the mixing board with that? Were the earlier videos where you were demoing the the JTV acoustic sounds using that 2 volume pedal technique (2 separate amp/EFX chains)?

I find that to tame the acoustic sounds in JTV I was employing 2 sometimes 3 of the Line 6 Eq's in the Dream Rig. Are you using any of these? Well that was when I was making the programs sound close to decent coming from the Line 6 amps. Now going to the House PA or even to The Fishman Acoustic amp, I get a pretty transparent sound and don't need those EQs. Do you agree with me that the acoustic JTV models sound better out to a PA?

I like your 2 chain preset very much as I don' thave to go up to the amps to physically bring down their sound. All can be done from the 2 volume pedals. House PA up, Line 6 amps down. I am able to use this as a template for all my electric and acoustic sounds for a show. I am not limited to 4 effects for the electrics as I am using the programmable EFX loops to bring in some of my favorite pedals. So I don't feel limited at all. I do like to have some reverb, chorus and a touch of slap back echo on my acoustic sounds along with a little compressiion. The electrics can sound great with or without EFX but I like having the The EFX loops here for when I want to bring in additional distortions, mod and time EFx and not run out of EFX slots or DSP. Really man, your acoustic JTV tones sound as good or better than my real acoustic Martin. How are you doing that?

Sean, I rarely run out of DSP. When I am using the 2 chain presets and I get a DSP overload signal... I found that removing cabinet sims usually allows me to add the additional EFX(s) that I want. Then I find that I can put the cabinet Sims back in if that is what I want to do, and the DSP does not bark back at me. Usually for Dream Rig stuff I use Pre-amp models only with no cabinet Sims as my DT amp and The spider Valve are covering those bases physically anyway. Do you do that too?

I am sure many of us would be delighted with any suggestions you could throw out to us concerning tone from JTV guitars, HD 500, DT amps, Dream Rig integration, and the Acoustic situation. Set-ups, tone settings and tips would be greatly appreciated

One final request... Joost VerGoosen has some pretty helpful videos too. He even has some patches that he has offered that sound quite good, but on trying to get those, the address does not work. Can you get in touch with him to fix this?

Thanks again! Looking forward to your thread. Your contributions are really appreciated and are directly beneficial to musicians playing Line 6 gear. Really a good job on those videos!

Funky

The guitar playing is of course inspiring,

but the information is really useful especially the "Dream Rig" stuff. Do you know about Craig Anderton's "Dream Rig" thread

in Pro Reviews on harmonycentral.com? I think you might get a kick out of perusing that.

I had a Variax 700 and the Acoustic Variax 700. I liked the acoustic sounds in both. I thought the Acoustic Variax was better.

I am now getting pretty decent acoustic sound from my JTV 69. I either send the output to the house PA or to a Fishman Loudbox Artist if I am in a small club. Nothing that I do with the JTV sounds nearly as good as what I hear you getting tonewise in those videos. I am sure I speak for many of us when I ask you...How did you achieve that tone? what was the set up?

I don't recall you ever answering any of these threads before. Really good to have you participate with us. Please feel free to add your 2 cents to anything that goes on here. It will be much appreciated. Please keep those "Dream Rig" tips coming.

I read the post about the kinman PUs. Sounds like a great idea.
