Re: POD HD Pro Live Setup

Also, check out the 1U Rocktron power amp, it supposedly has good reviews and is cheap. The setup you described is exactly how I run live though - stereo to FOH and stereo to cab. Don't forget, you can throw in an FX block at the end of your chain and use this for additional outputs. I use the FX loop, but only in mono for effects. By using the right side of the loop, I can send my signal to a sound card on stage so that the drummer can have me direct for his IEM mix too. It's a lot of outputs! Ha.

Also will say that I battled the same problem between getting the percussive/djent sound in the upper end vs. having a full tone. The rest of the guys in my group would continually laugh at me, cover their ears when I thought I'd find one that "bit" enough in a mix, and then pull up a parametric EQ and begin cutting. With that being said, we now only us my Pod for certain effects which aren't reproducible on my buddy's Axe 2 (seeker, etc.) for recording. It's just been easier for us. I too would like to know what some of those guys are doing to get bite and full-body from the Pod.

I'll give the reason for my first reply to hopefully make it clearer. I too haven't had much exposure with preamps or converters, and hence can't recommend one of those preamps. I can only recommend going to a production forum and asking dudes who do this for a living or are serious hobbyist. In my group, we run a cheaper Focusrite preamp into a Presonus Firestudio. That sounds far superior to the time when I've ran an SM7 into the Pod and used the "vintage preamp."

Hopefully a guru can step in and offer better input regarding the Pod's transparency. Not sure if the Pod's preamps or converters are more so responsible to the end sound. If irishpriest above is correct, then it looks like you'll need both a preamp and interface. However, I'm sort of with mdmayfield above where he places least importance on the converter/interface. I know that the Firestudio is nothing special, yet you see bands like Periphery and Red Seas Fire who are famous for home demos using one. I think that says something about the converter/interface in relationship to a preamp. Makes me want to look up the comparisons between the converters of the Pod and entry level interfaces/Duet.

From what I understand, hip-hop/R&B/electro dudes prefer these for that reason. I guess you need to answer this question by determing what music you intend on primarily mixing and working with. I've got the Yamaha HS50Ms and want to get rid of them pretty badly for the 8s, but I mostly play metal/rock. 5s would be fine for indie/folk/acoustic type of stuff. Don't forget that the Yamaha 8s were designed to be replicas of the famous NS10s too...

We've definitely been eyeing the 24 channel PreSonus board with 5 stereo AUXs. You also brought up other interesting topics, dry vocals and 26 dB of isolation. I forgot to mention those initially, thanks. Really liking your idea of setting up a wired system with our current gear to get a feeling for it all. No harm in having a a few practices with this setup. A lack of stereo field could really bring down the whole experience and show us that we need even more gear, rendering the idea pointless until later on (if we achieve the level of success which warrants such a system).

He's already purchased a set of CIEMs from Ultimate Ears and will be getting the transmitter soon. The rest of us are holding out because we have other things to finance first, like a professional level EP, merch and video, but I'm trying to gage in advance what I should be saving for (lusting after a G90 as well - haha). Also, we have a mixer since we have a PA, so we'll probably pick up a splitter snake and use our board's AUXs for setting personal mixes without having to rely on the FOH guy. This applies for our current use of wedges or an IEM system.

Hollis pointed out exactly what I was trying to get at though. I've read about IEMs being either a 'love it' or 'hate it' type of thing. I imagine I'd be a 'love it' guy, but that's a hefty chunk of change to put down if the benefit isn't all that great in a guitarist's context. While it might not be something easily answered on a forum without trying first, I was going to see if there were any of you out there that had conviction on which side of the fence you stand, and why.

Discussion: Guitarists' use of IEMs

Looking for others' opinions on the matter. My band, and me personally, would love to swap to IEM use and do away with wedges; BUT, being poor and only a guitarist (no vocals), is it really necessary? We play progressive metal type stuff/metalcore, and are strictly set to a click with heavy use of electronic backing tracks (also have the computer run patch changes). We aren't touring but hope to be within a year.

The drummer has obvious need for click and desired mix, as do the vocalists. What are your inputs from a guitarist stand point? Is it worth the investment of single/dual driver CIEMs and a $1000 Senheisser transmitter? I ask because with the world of digital modelling, we theoretically don't need to run cabs on stage. I get the loss of vibe/mojo/air movement/whatever you want to call it, but let's face it, not hauling 100 lbs of 4x12 or a rack amp/head is sweet. Likewise, you see plenty of "pro" bands going this route (queue Periphery/TesseracT and the sorts).

Sorry, it's not an L6 question per se, but it is still applicable here.
