Reflash fixed it. It needed a setup as it played a bit clunky from the factory. Once that was done it has been great. I had less issue with this guitar than I have had with the rest of my guitars. I purchased a jtv59 black.

Often it had to do with a burr at the point of string bend in the saddle as you've suggested or the angle at the point of bend was too extreme. The later caused by players tightening the springs to have a vintage trem sit flat on the body. Most modern saddles relieve this issue by forcing a more gradual, more rounded point of bend in the string.

Bolt on necks and floating bridges are typically less energy efficient. Heavy tone blocks help this a bit. I would say in my experiments the tonal differences between electric models is really subtle but the accoustic models sounded less punchy.

I'm assuming that 10 gauge is the referance used for the models.

Material does matter. I used pure nickel DR strings and they did not have the same as they have on magnetic pickups. They made the low end muddy through the piezos. I ended up using regular slinky's. I was able to get a 2 32nd inch action at the 12th fret on the high side and 3 32nd on the bass side (factory spec from Gibson for a 1959 Les Paul) with no buzz.

Sustain did improve but the general noise floor was higher. I also found with anything less than 10 gauge the the truss rod was almost at a slack tension and the tuning became more temperature sensitive. I guess it makes sense to me, as it really is accoustic pickup system that has been co-opted as a reference singnal to filter to create a desired model, that it would function better with higher guage strings.

I experimented with this a bit. What I discovered is that 9's didn't work as well due to the piezos. Essentially you can equalize magnetic pickup sensitivity by adjusting proximity, but since the piezo are not adjustable, string mass matters. I found that 10's or 11's had little variance from each other but were far superior to the 9's and made the accoustic models sound better. Another thing I found different is that slight string buzz that magnetic pickups ignore is present in piezos so I had to set the action to absolutly no buzz. I found that higher guage strings allowed for a lower action without buzz. Hope this helps.
