Re: JTV acoustic sounds versus Variax Acoustic 700

Sean

When I first got my JTV, and was less than happy with the acoustic sound, I did a lot of fiddling around, and ended up getting great results. The biggest improvement came with a good setup - higher action, most importanty - and the damping of the trem springs in my JTV69. But I got a lot of improvement in the acoustic settings by replacing the plain G string with a wound 18. I eventually went back to the plain 17, because the electric models suffered, but the wound string idea seems to agree with your statement earlier about the Variax 700. I played one of those recently, and I agree, it does do acoustic better, and not surprisingly.

Like Funky, I play my JTV through a Fishman Artist, and I get GREAT results. I have a bunch of acoustics - real ones - including a Taylor with their expression system, arguably the best pickup system for an acoustic guitar on the market. Well, the JTV, in acoustic mode, is significantly better than any of them. Zero "piezo quack", and capo stability. Does it sound like a mic'd real acoustic? Not exactly, but it sure blows away any pickup system. And with the convenience of zero stage mic "overhead", the JTV wins, in my book, hands down.

If I had one minor wish-list item, strangely enough, I would ask Line6 for a piezo simulation. That sound is desirable in some situations.

Cheers

Larry

Re: JTV 1.9 out

My 2 cents worth:

I installed v1.9 of the JTV firmware last night. My initial reaction is that palm muting is a little better, especially noticeable on high-gain left or right hand damping techniques (electric models), not so noticeably different on acoustics. IMO, for both guitar families, the damping is acceptable, but far from perfect - yet.

However, and this might just be my imagination, but I think the acoustic models sound a little better than before, more body sound coming through? I replaced everything in the update, of course, so some of my forgotten tweaking was replaced, which might account for the better acoustics. I wanted to establish a 6th fret virtual capo, using the on-guitar method, which I use for one song, and struggled like hell for 30-40 minutes to get it right. Never had that much trouble previously.

Larry

I paid a fair price for my 2/3 Dream Rig too, cannot complain on that score. My beef is not with L&M at all, it's with the Quebec distributor.

I also own a Godin Multiac, with synth access. They are a Quebec-based manufacturer, and I have similar issues with them. Maybe it's something in the Quebec water?

Cheers

There are a few monster music/electronic distributors in Quebec, and all of them are the same, in my experience - no inventory, no support, and a bad attitude. I'll say this for L&M, who own the sole distributor rights for Gibson in Canada through their Yorkville division - they do a great job with Gibson products. Their product knowledge, training & support is excellent on Gibsons. Maybe Line6 needs to look around for another Canadian distributor.

Anyhow, I'm glad there is another JTV player in the Brampton area. What do you mean by "JTV-693TS", by t he way? Mine's just a JTV-69 never seen that nomenclature before.

Larry

I bought my JTV-69 from L&M Brampton (Ontario), sight unseen. They had no inventory in their entire 61-store system, and I think I am still the only customer for the JTV at Brampton, ever. When my guitar eventually came in - it took 2 or 3 months from order - the sales guys all played with it like they'd never seen one. They definitely did not know how to change modes, how the tuning worked, or even how to turn it on, so I doubt whether there was ever any Line6 product training, but nobody at Brampton tried to steer me away from the JTV. They sell the POD HD500 more regularly, and this weekend I saw the very first DT-25, 1x12 combo there. Brampton is a fairly big branch.

I think the issue might be more with the Quebec-based sole distributor for Line6, than with L&M itself. The Quebec guys don't even keep a VDI cable or spare battery in inventory, let alone a guitar, and so everything is a special order. I would not be at all surprised if Line6 expected the distributor (VAR) to provide in-store training and product education, which is not happening. The L&M guys tell me that getting anything out of the distributor is difficult, at best.

I took my JTV-69 in for a free setup at L&M, and the tech there (who is pretty good) had never seen one either. Based on all of this, I bought a 2-year extended warranty.

Larry
