Curing the DT25 noise problem - 12AX7 or EL84s?

I have a few questions:

1. Have people found that it was the 12AX7 phase inverter causing the problem or was it the EL84 power tubes?

2. If it is the 12AX7, can I just swap it without any adjustment/biasing etc?

3. Which 12AX7s do you recommend? I gather that it won't have a huge impact on tone as it's not a preamp/poweramp tube.

I'm not familiar with replacing tubes so I'm hoping that a simple swap of the 12AX7 will cure the problem!

Thanks

This should be the same as using the pre only, although in practice it doesn't sound identical. It does mean you don't save on DSP but I rarely have problems with that using a single amp.

Personally I've started to use the full models with the master DEP on 30 - 50%. I don't run my DT25 very loud, so it helps the tubes out!

Is that because you find it fairly similar? I've had a 500 since they first came out and have never had any problems with it. I'm wondering if I can justify over £1000 for a JTV. My conclusion is that it depends on the improvement in the modelling. I'm starting to use my strat and Les Paul a lot more now as I think they have more depth of tone than the variax 500 (especially with the HD500/DT25). I hear conflicting opinions on the JTV modelling ranging from 'much the same' to 'a huge improvement'. Hopefully I'll get to try one soon.

Re: Patches for HD500 reproducing DT25 4 voicings

As regards trying to get the same sound out of the HD + DT as opposed to DT alone, I think people are missing the point slightly with matching tone knob setting etc. Obviously you want to match the amp model, voicing/topology and volume settings, but that's the easy bit. What about the settings which aren't selectable on the DT but are on the HD?

I'm thinking of:

Input settings - setting input 2 to 'same' or 'variax'

Impedance

Cab settings

Output settings - Direct/studio, combo pwr amp etc.

Mixer volume

From what I've found I get a much better likeness using input 2 set to 'same'. I was an ardent input 2 'variax' user but having gone back to 'same' after recent posts I think it's way better. Maybe L6 changed things in the last couple of updates.

It's fairly safe to assume the DT impedance is 1m ohm as all amp models are set to that. If you were using 270k it wouldn't sound as bright as the DT standalone.

Cab settings - I think the DT does use the default cab for the amp rather than 'no cab'

If using 'no cab' the output settings would have little or no effect, but I think they are used. It would make sense as the single speaker configurations have a relatively transparent speaker.

Output settings obviously depend on your configuration but the studio/direct sounds very different/wrong to me. I suppose the DT head might internally have the stack pwramp setting and the DT combo have combo pwr amp setting but I think this might be the area of difference. I prefer combo pwr with my DT25 head/HD500 as I'm using an openback Vetta 2x12 cab. I don't get any option in standalone mode - but it still sounds great!

Mixer settings should probably be on 0.

I may be barking up the wrong tree but I've got my HD500/DT25 setup sounding near enough to DT25 standalone quality to make me happy anyway.

(It may also be to do with the position of POD fx etc after the pre, but maybe L6 link can do that anyway).

This makes me also query how the DT configures itself in full power mode. Does it simply select voicing/class/pentode or triode or are there other configurations relating to the POD HD models? This quote from the L6 link conectivity guide makes me think the DT configures other stuff behind the scenes:

"The Super O, Twed B-man, A-15 and Brit Plexi J-45 share an aspect (their analog B+ voltage) that differs from the other POD HD Amp Models, which can also be a source of disruption. To minimize this disruption, limit the cases where you switch between one of these Amp Models and one of the other POD Amp models."

It would be nice if Line 6 would make things a bit clearer here.

I think that when using a HD500 via L6 link the DT in LVM doesn't actually provide any power amp modelling. If it did, why would we have to use full models on the HD500? You'd be doubling up on power amp modelling. The confusion arises because the manual and other literature says that in LVM the DT provides power amp modelling BUT that seems to only apply when using the DT in standalone mode. This makes sense because the DT would appear to only have power amp models for the 4 amps that it includes (not the 20+ others in the HD500).
