More seriously there is a captcha on the registration, so it must have been manually created or it is easily bypassed. Can somebody from Line 6 please disable the users and delete all threads that they initiated.

I don't find the Workbench help screens very useful either, but I am waiting with my fingers crossed because there is more than a slight hint that with the new HD electric models will come a replacement workbench.

Frustrated with the lack of help from Line-6 various users have put together some information - for example in this thread: http://line6.com/support/message/359065#359065

One of the messages on that thread points to VettaVille which you might not have spotted before, but is a Line 6 Enthusiast Site that was started based on the Vetta amp range (digital amp modelling built into the amp). Vetta is now as good as dead replaced by HD Pod and DT Amps, but the site covers most things Line 6 including the only authoritative Workbench User Guide that I have found anywhere http://www.vettaville.nl/page.php?id=95 - it isn't technically complete, but it is all that there is. If anybody knows any better then please let us know.

I would be happy to get MIDI out via an HD500.

I know that the JTV can send control data from the Volume and Tone knobs that the HD500 can use as Controller changes - don't know if it is MIDI CC or not, but always in the past it has been said that the VDI carries digital audio and MIDI so it is MIDI that I would expect to be used.

I know that a JTV does absolute pitch detection for Virtual Capo to be set.

Therefore in my idealised world the JTV does the Note detection and passes the MIDI Note On, Velocity, etc over the VDI Cable to the HD500 which outputs it via the hardware MIDI Out/Through Socket.

This at least is (theoretically) possible as firmware only changes.

You can set each string in the range -12 to + 12 relative to what it is actually tuned to, that is up to 1 octave Up or Down with the 12 fret used as the standard tuning position.

Show me how to use a Capo to give a C below the root E based tuning...

But using the guitar alone it is a bit tricky getting +12 which needs to use the 24th fret on a JTV69 with only 22 frets.

The setting is relative to standard tuning - so if you have tuned down to Eb and then want to use the Virtual Capo you have to treat the 13th Fret as the baseline position.

Or you use an HD500 which allows you to set the virtual capo on a patch by patch basis directly.

If its any consolation if you have a JTV Variax the Volume and Tone knobs become additional controllers in a POD HD, so the Tone Knob can control Delay Freeback and Phaser Speed, etc exactly as you are suggesting - personally with both hands occupied I find that I limit myself to the pedals (but I really would like EXP 3).

I do understand where you are coming from with this and I think it would be nice to have "External Controllers" as an option rather than mapping the MIDI controllers onto (and therefore overriding) the physical ones. It would also be nice if the 2 JTV controllers could be mapped out over MIDI.

On the other hand of course most guitarists are luddites for whom guitar and amp perfection was achieved 40 or so years ago and struggle with the concept of MIDI patch change

1) Of the current range HD500 and HDPro can control (and be controlled by in a very limited way) a JTV; the 300 and 400 do not have a VDI socket. The HD Patch saves the JTV Patch and optionally Tone and individual String tuning settings, whenever you change the HD Patch the JTV will change to the saved settings, but obviously the controls on the guitar remain where they were. You can also use the JTV Volume and Tone knob as additional controllers to vary settings on the HD.

2) Yes. They have two logical inputs on each patch, so for Input 1 set the source to Variax and Input 2 set the source to Variax Mags. These get sent to the upper and lower paths in the HD so if your patch is arranged so that the upper and lower paths start on the left each source gets completely independent treatment. You can use Volume controls or the mixer to control the blend of the two sounds.

3) Yes. As above, but put nothing in either path and Pan the Upper path hard Left in the Mixer and the Lower path hard right.

4) Yes - many people with VDI cables just take the Battery out. Do NOT use cat-5 network cables for more than testing purposes - they work, but the connector is not intended to wiggled about much and can break either of the sockets. Instead get a proper VDI or EtherCon cable which as well as being more of an instrument cable in the way it flexes also has Neutrik connectors that match the HD and Guitar and provide a solid and reliable connection.

5) At this point I don't know - there are other discussions where people talk about changing the pickups and it not affecting the Modelling at all, but the switch is a different issue because it controls both analogue and models, besides it is a 5 position sliding switch - what else would you put in its place?

Read the HD500 Advanced Guide starting at Page 2.11, get a proper VDI cable and play with it until you understand how it works. It is really simple and there is no point copying the content of the manual.
