Following continuing frustration on getting my HD500 to reliably get the sounds I want from my DT25 it got me thinking...

As everything on the DT is configurable via MIDI and people on this forum have even written apps to control the amps, surely it must be possible to program a MIDI pedal board such as this...

What do you reckon? From the product description it sounds to me like you should be able to program the pedal to send the required codes?

Has anyone tried using something like this and was it successful?

All I really want to do is get a good amp sound and be able to save it so that I can retrieve it via a pedal switch.

I can't comment on the Rockcrusher, but I use a DR.Z Brake Lite attenuator and although a bit pricey (£150 in UK) it "does what it says on the tin".

I can have my volumes up high to get those great valve sounds but without deafening the rest of the band.

From the website.... "The Brake Lite works with any tube amp up to 45 watts and can be used with 4, 8, or 16, ohm loads. Very simple to install, the Brake Lite mounts with 2 screws and has a hardwired speaker cable to plug into the amp chassis. Plug the speaker into the Brake Lite and you are ready to go."

I've also had one of these in my Marshall 1974X for the last 6 years (which was my primary amp until I bought the DT25 last September) and it's never given any problems.

So if the Rockcrusher is like the Dr.Z and claims it works for your power and resistance you should be able to use it without any worries. And in my opinion the DT does sound better with the volume up high and the valves "cooking".

My experience is that these are LOUD amps, but it does depend what topology you're using, ie: a topology 1 Fender is a lot quieter than a topology 3 AC30 with the gain cranked up.

Also i've found the speaker very directional, so if you're stood directly in front of it, it seems a LOT louder than a couple of feet either side.

What i've done to get around this is to fit a Dr Z Airbrake Lite Attenuator so I can drop the volume and fit a "beam blocker" in front of the speaker to disperse the sound.

It's really worked for me!

In case anyone's interested... I now have a "beam blocker" AND a Dr. Z Airbrake Lite Attenuator installed in my DT25..

Wow! These 2 things are ESSENTIAL.

The beam blocker spreads the sounds out and the attenuator allows me to leave the amp cranked up high without deafening volume (unless required).

I thought this amp was good before, but with the valves really cooking it takes it to a different level.

I've fallen in love with this amp all over again.

My daughter got her burger back :-)

Despite working so well, the gaffer tape and plastic burger bun solution just looked a bit naff, so I spent the money for a proper diffuser and got a Tayden one (http://www.lean-business.co.uk/eshop/tayden-sonic-diffuser-for-12-guitar-speakers-p-508.html) as no-one seems to sell the Weber in the UK.

Jeez.... What a pain to fit it.

Not a problem with the diffuser, just that there's so little space in the back of the DT25.

I ended up having to remove the valves and unbolt the transfomer to get enough room to get the diffuser under the speaker and all the time because of the speaker magnet it was trying to attach itself to anything metal.

Getting the transformer back on was a pain because the nuts inside the actual encased amp part are not captive, so you have to open up the amp casing and again there's not a lot of room in there. There were a few other odds and sods of pain too boring to detail and I must have struggled for an hour and a half to get it all sorted and back together again.

Looks and sounds great now, but wow, a lot of effort....

I've got a gig at the weekend and for reasons too dull to go into I won't be using my DT25, hence the question about how to set up the HD for FX only.

However, I went to rehearsal last night with the Marshall amp i'll be using at the weekend and the HD500 but i'd forgotten to set the output mode.

Jeez, it sounded horrible, really horrible. If anyone was wondering, you really do need to set the ouput mode correctly for FX only.

Not doing so is a great way to make a good amp sound bad.

Thanks for the info.

One last question... If I have set the ouput as you described and then at a later date plug the HD500 into a DT25 via the L6 cable do I need to change the output back or is it "clever" enough to bypass anything i've done to work correctly with the DT25?

Hi!

Sorry to be a bit thick, but what are you referring to with ouput modes and "front modes" ?

Imagine i've got the HD500 in front of me, guitar plugged into "Guitar In" and output going from 1/4" "L Mono" unbalanced out to my amp and my laptop attached running HD Edit.

What exactly do i need to do to ensure that no simulated amp "voicing" is applied to the signal ?

Just to add my 2 cents...

I'm glad I hadn't read all the horror stories when I ordered my Korean JTV-59 as i may not have gone for it !

I had tried a number of JTV-69s in local stores and they were just horrible to play. The 59, although a little heavier than I would like and missing out on a trem (which I do like to use) was just lovely.

I own some pretty high end guitars and my 59 doesn't look or feel like cheap junk compared to them.

It seems from all the postings on the forum that quality control is rather patchy, but good guitars do leave the factory. I know coz I got one!

So certainly, give Line 6 a chance and try finding a good 'un. I love having 28 instruments just a knob turn away...
