Testing out different headphones

I'd been using low-impedance headphones with the POD HD desktop before i found that the POD HD's specifications suggest 150-600 ohms. I ordered 2 high impedance headphones, thinking that there would be an obvious tone and performance improvement

Headphones used:

Grado SR80 - 32 ohms - $100

Sennheiser HD280 Pro - 64 ohms - $100

Sennheiser HD600 - 150 ohms - $400

Beyerdynamic DT880 Premium - 600 ohm - $350

i'm not an audiophile by any account, so its hard to put into words the differences in what i heard. but i don't think there was anything intrinsic to the higher impedance headphones, othere than them being much more expensive, and therefore "better" sound quality.

and actually, the HD600 (and the DT880) had a hissy/fizzy quality, like there was a bit of sand on the speaker. but maybe that goes away after some time and the tone smooths out.

I would like a really good reason to keep either the HD600, or the DT880 but there isn't 3 - 4 times tonal quality improvement over the SR80, or the HD280 to justify the cost.

Considering price, Grado is the clear winner. with the DT880 providing more upper frequency, to the point of being a little harsh. But nothing about the tone or quality coming from the POD HD sounded more "real" to my ears with them.

i spent the least amount of time with the HD600, just because i knew they were going back because they are too expensive (and the hissy/fizzy sound quality)

I'm going to return the 2 headphones and experiment with a couple headphone amplfiers

i hope this helps

PS: maybe i'll do some more comparisons between the SR80 and the DT880 and try to be a little more niuanced. maybe study up on some headphone terminology like "sound stage".
