M20D and 2 Bose Compacts at 3 day festival

I work with a group of musicians who play on a virtual world on the internet called Second Life. About 6 times a year, we get about 20 musicians and 30-50 fans, rent a hotel meeting room and jam for 3 days straight. No schedule, musicians come up, plug in and start jamming with others. To keep things small (and fit in my car) I have 2 bose compact speakers (so no need for monitors) and the M20D. This ROCKED. There were no sound checks ahead of time, (since didn't know who was playing or, on what inputs, so needed a way to quickly adjust trim, levels, etc. We also streamed the sound into Second Life and broadcast the video (and audio!) on Livestream. This little mixer was simple, (could teach others how to handle the mixer when I was AFK) and just worked really really well. Attached is a picture of part of the fun!

Am I the only one disappointed with the firmware feature list?

A year after the M20D was announced, over 6 months since I received mine, we finally get version 1.1 and I find the list of new features a huge disappointment! The competing products (Macke, Behringer) have all come out with numerious updates with bug fixes and new features, Line 6, ONE upgrade with a couple new features. It seems like there is no one listening to our requests at Line 6. (There have been so many suggestions that would make this mixer easier to work with!). The M20D was (and still is) so much ahead of the competition, but with them going this slow, 1 year for some required bug fixes and a couple of new features, I am thinking that the turtle(s) will catch up with the hare! Wondering if I made a huge mistake investing in this technology almost a year ago!

I was really hoping for some new UI features to make it faster / easier to "turn" the encoders.

I wonder if it will be another 12 months until we get version 1.2 with a few more new features...

The competing products (Macke, Behringer) while shipping after the M20D have each had 3-6 updates which have fixed bugs and added new functionality. With the info from Line 6 that we can expect the next update after the new year, it seems to me that Line 6 plans to announce firmware updates at every NAMM. One of the reasons to embrace digital technology is that the software can easily (and often!) be updated. I really really hope taht Line 6 will be more responsive and not have us waiting a year for every new patch.

Scott, it sounds like you are using a wifi stick instead of the apple usb to ethernet connector and a wifi router. I am sort of sorry they offer the usb stick option, because you do have the issues you mention. If you use the external router, it takes 1-2 seconds for the app to re-connect to the M20 after you open the app.

Delay Option for Mains?

Is it possible to delay the main outs for when they are closer to the audience than the artists? If so how? also, what is the built in delay?

Setting up mixer for house party and I am thinking this might be the best stand for the mixer! It's solid and has the plus that the sound guy (ME!) can stay hydrated throughout the long show. (of course, the quality and creativeness of my mixing might change a tad as my "hydration" increases.

I dont understand about the problem with the router during setup. using the wifi dongle required you to plug it into the USB jack. using the router requires me to plug it into the USB jack "AND" plug it into power. No config, nothing else to wire up. maybe 30 more seconds!

While I did like the idea (size, and no need for another power outlet) of using a wifi dongle, my suggestion is to just pretend it does not exist and buy the USB to Ethernet adaptor from Apple and then your fav. small wireless router. (I love the apple airport express for $100 bucks.). This is ROCK SOLID! The mixer is connected to the router via an ethernet cable, this is bombproof. The router is dual-band and transmits on both 2.4G and 5G. It is like there are 2 routers in one. You can have your IPad connect to which ever one is better. I have had this working for 3 days straight at a jam with zero drop outs.)

Bottom line, you paid $2,500 for a world class mixer, spend the extra $130 and you will have excellent remote connection.

you could be right. This "COULD" be a perfect verison 1.0 release. Oh wait; there have been many topics that are supposed to be addressed in future upgrades. Some include, latency issues via usb, ability to have monitor out pre-compression, UI Enhancements. WiFi Issues, etc. Don't get me wrong, I am a pretty happy camper, but I would hope that when issues are raised, that it does not take 6 months to address and fix them.

Besides bug fixes, I expect to see enhancements / improvements to the UI. As good as it is, there are many ways to make it even better, now that there has been feedback from real users.

I am only slightly disappointed;

Not with my M20D. I do think it is a game changer (such an overused term!).

When I look at the some of the competitions products and users groups I am a “tad” concerned. Line 6 says their 1^st update to the firmware should be expected sometime next year (more than 6 months from when it shipped).

Mackie has shipped their 3^rd version of their software. (ok, not major updates, but at least they seem to be more responsive to the user needs). Their user community seems to be much more active and there seems to be a sense of community that does not exist on the Line 6 board. There is a lot of general live music support (Q&A) that is missing from here. Perhaps it would help if the users of the M20D had a place to tell a little about them selfs (geographic locations, main use of the mixer, etc.)

I am not familar with how often the Behringer X32 has been updated, but I do know there has been at least one firmware upgrade. This mixer has gotten a lot of notice / comments on a few different pro-sound boards. Perhaps what Line6 needs is an evangelist?

Am I way off base?

Is there something that the user community (or Arnie) can do to help this?

Btw, I live in Bloomfield Connecticut and use my mixer mostly for "jam" sessions where 10-20 musicians get together for 3 days of non-stop music. (Do I get extra brownie points if I mention that the M20D was used as the sound system for one of Paul Ryan's fundraising speeches? naaa... didn't think so.)
