Connecting phone to M9

Hi

I want to connect my phone (Samsung Galaxy) to my M9, to one of the inputs. The signal from the phone is stereo. I have a few options and I'm not sure which is best. Eventually I will make a monoing cable but for now I can't and have to choose one of the other options.

1. Convert the stereo file to a mono file and use a mono cable. I don't know if it's possible that the signal will pass through the non-existing conductor so there won't be any sound?

2. Same but using a stereo cable. Is it possible that the signal will pass through the conductor that isn't sending anything to the M9? Or maybe some other problem?

3. Convert the stereo file into a stereo with both sides identical, copied from the above converted mono file. Then use a mono cable.

4. Same as (3) but using a stereo cable.

Thanks!

Before buying it I considered seperate analogue effects instead. I rarely use distortion. I mostly use the reverbs, delays, mods and sometimes the filters. I compared and found that for what I need, not only I get a lot more from the M9, I also prefer the way it sounds.

I tried it and honestly there isn't much difference. With the pedal as closed as I could get it while still squeezing my pinky to switch, I heard a small difference. The swell/fade was worse on one side i.e. this bump happened in an even shorter distance. The better side is still not good at all. Especially that big jump in volume with the audiable "bump" that I can hear clearly.

One problem is that it's not gradual at all. The last centimeter (probably less) has a big jump in volume from loudest to much quieter. The rest of the rtange is very gradual until it is silent, but only because there is not much volume left to change for this big movement. There is also an audiable bump, especially when I move it very slowly. The bump is especially obvious if I play a loop that goes through the volume pedal (less when the volume pedal is before the looper) which is how I intend to use it...

I'll see if another store has the Boss 500L and 500H and try both. Though after seeing this Ernie ball and most others are more or less the same size, I'm starting to think about the Morley Mini. It doesn't have a potentiometer and is so much smaller.

Thanks.

Yes, "wasting" a slot by using the volume pedal effect is exactly what I meant that is not an option most of the time, except when I only use one or two effects at the same time (which is not often).

Yes, an "engineering-based explanation" is what I'm interested in. I've now seen the comment about the more gradual change in volume and that might be a good reason. "Loss of highs" is common to see but is really too vague...

I think I will just go with the Boss 500L for now. I hope they will let me test it and return if it doesn't work good enough. I might have to do that at the store (a bit annoying to bring all my equipment...) but still worth it. If it doesn't work well I'll see what I'll do.

This will be for those times when an effect is suddenly louder and I can't change the parameter or add an effect to make it softer in the M9 itself. I'll try to organize the effects in the M9 as much as I can in advance to match volume.

Thanks again.

Re: Volume pedal before and after M9

Thank you.

I'll start from the end. The expression pedal is not as cheap here (assuming you are in USA) but I still bought one and it's on its way. I will at first get the expression pedal and one volume pedal, which is what you also suggested. I will try to control my effects as much as posible inside the scenes, thoguh could be problematic as the mix parameter, when not on full, will pass some of the original signal (don't want that). But the situations where I have something playing from the M9 and I need to control my input volume are very few so I think I will manage with those.

Re using the volume pedal effect, it is rare that I don't already use the three slots for the effect I want, so it's not possible most of the time.

I found the impedance of the pickup and of the multieffect. It is clear that the former needs a high impedance and the latter is recommended to use a low impedance. But...

The only experts I found so far, which explained everything in clear, accurate and specific terms, said that as long as everything else remains the same, it is only important that the pedal has at least as high impedance as the source coming into it. This means that I must use a high impedance pedal after the pickup but it doesn't matter which one I use after the multieffect as both will have higher impedance than the M9 output of 700 Ohm.

Then... everyone who recommended high for before and low for after either gave no reason (other than repeating companies and other posts), or vague details such as "reduce quality of the signal" (in what way?!), "may not give a consistent tone" (in what way?!), etc.

I was even suggested that the companies themselves are in fact wrong in their "recipe" suggestion that a low impedance pedal should be used after the multieffect.

I'm still waiting to find someone who can explain the exact and specific details of what happens if I use a high impedance volume pedal after a multieffect with a low impedance output like the M9. If it wil lreduce the quality of the signal, how exactly? Have they tried that and found this issue? etc.

The reaon I'm really digging into this is just because, if those experts are correct, I can get a high impedance pedal and use it both before and after the multieffect. If there is a problem, I will get the low impedance version and sacrifice the 5% of the time I might want to use it before the multieffect.

Thanks again.

Thanks. I found the first thread you linked but not the second one that gave the input and output impedances which really helped a lot.

It is clear now that I need a high pedal after the pickup and a low (or high) pedal after the M9. AFAIK the impedance of the pedal needs to be at least as much as the signal coming into it, but it is still not completely clear in what way a low impedance pedal would work better after the M9, since obth should work. I guess there are some advantages?

As far as what I'm trying to do, I don't really need the pedal for "swells" since it is a clarinet and I can do that with my breath

Though some effects might work better with a pedal "swell" even with the clarinet, so I might try that too.

The pedal before the M9 is to control my volume when an effect suddenly makes it significantly louder, but without sustain. I think it might be this way more since it's not a guitar, but I'm not sure. In these cases I want to control my input volume, make it lower, but without affecting e.g. a loop running, reverb volume, etc.

The volume pedal after the M9 is for controling the volume of whatever come out of my M9. Delay, reverb, etc. For example if I use a couple of delays and make an "endless" delay and change the speed, or something like that. It can suddenly become too loud and a pedal before the M9 wouldn't change that at all.

Volume pedal before and after M9

Hi

I'm going to get a volume pedal and it will be mostly connected between the Line 6 M9 and the main mixer/console. I will get a second volume pedal to connect between the pickup and the M9. I can get either the Boss FV-500 H or L (preferable), or one of the Ernie Ball models. But I am not sure which one I need for which use.

My chain is: Clarinet pickup - Lehle Little Dual (http://www.lehle.com/products/LittleDual/index.php?country=&lang=en) - Line 6 M9 - mixer/console. Occasionally the M9 might be connected to a DI and then to the main console, when the console is too far from the the stage (but usually not).

According to the pickup maker, "its resonant impedance at 1 KHz is 400Ω and its nominal impedance is 220KΩ with potentiometer, and for better results you must use the High input volume pedal". If I understand this means 220KΩ (not sure what the first 1 KHz measurement means) and needs the High Impedance pedal. According to Lehle it will ouput the same impedance that is sent into it from the pickup so it should be the same.

I also understand it is better to use a Low Impedance volume pedal after the M9 to the mixer. But, I was told I need the volume pedal with at least as high impedance as the input and that means a High Impedance pedal should work both before and after M9. However, the Low Impedance would only work after. My volume pedal will be connected after the M9 almost always. What advantage is there to use a Low Impedance pedal after the M9? Or does the M9 actually need a High Impedance pedal after it?

The plan is to get one pedal to use after the M9. Later get another to use before. It is an advantage if I can use the first one both before and after, but I have to get the pedal that comes after the M9 first.

Sorry for the length and I hope it's not too messy, I am a little confused by all of this...

Thanks!
