The forum's back! My problem has been solved and I thought I should post the solution in case it helps the OP and others with similar issues.

I saved my setlists using HD500 Edit and then bit the bullet, did a clean flash reinstall, as there was a new update available. For some reason it didn't work properly the first time and I could still see my patches, so I did it again. Then I performed a global settings reset as described here...

http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-2222

Then I recalibrated the expression pedal as described here...

http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-2223

I sent my saved setlists back to the HD500 and everything seems to be back to normal. I can make changes to my patches, save them, click to a different patch and when I click back the changes are preserved. Success! And it only took a few minutes.

Hi all.

I have a very similar problem to butz79, but on the HD500 itself. I increased the volume on one of my patches, saved it, clicked to another patch, then when I clicked back the volume was at its original level. I have retried, rebooted, made sure I was pressing save twice, retried, rebooted again, and nothing works. Changes do not persist. I first noticed this problem with preset patches that wouldn't save tweaks I made, but I was still able to tweak my own patches and save so I didn't worry too much. Now it's happening with my own patches.

I'll try again using the Edit software, but this problem happened at a rehearsal and I have to be able to make changes on the fly.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

OK, so final update.

Line 6 Monkey and HD500 Edit work fine for me in VirtualBox 4.4.12 with Ubuntu 12.04, 3.2 kernel as host and Windows 7 Home Premium as guest. There are a few provisos...

1. Adding a USB filter for the HD500 in VirtualBox settings works, as long as it's connected before you open Virtual box (didn't take me very long to figure that one out).

2. Enabling USB 2.0 in VirtualBox settings does not work for me and results in glitchy and unworkable communication between the the guest OS Windows 7, the HD500 and Line 6 Monkey and HD500 Edit software. It may work for you. My guess is that since the VirtualBox free edition (from the Ubuntu repos or Oracle's website) is well-known for being iffy with USB, the Ubuntu host is still controlling USB 2.0. VirtualBox and Windows 7 don't appear to have uncovered the deception, so what they don't know won't hurt them. I'm hiding something else from Windows 7, so this is a good sign. The pro version of VirtualBox works out of the box, if you believe what you read on the internet.

3. Initial sync fails with an error message about not being able to load all patches. Unplugging and rebooting the HD500 as instructed in the error message does not work for me (it does for jt). But don't panic...

4. Using the 'receive' button in the Edit software works fine. Receiving all settings takes about 30 seconds, a setlist takes about 10 seconds, and a patch is pretty much instantaneous.

Everything else works. I have sent and received patches, setlists and all settings, I have edited, saved, reloaded, opened, closed and rebooted everything in sight, but haven't encountered any difficulties.

I still can't get saved changes to preset patches on the HD500 itself to persist, no connection to computer, but I'll find a thread to ask about that somewhere. I'm working around it by using the Edit software instead.

That is all.

db

Message was edited by: dbgrant

Thanks for that jt. It's good to know 30 seconds isn't unusual, so far...

I've confirmed using #lsusb in the terminal in Ubuntu that my computer's Bus #1 is 2.0, and that when I plug a device into the socket I'm using for the HD500 it appears in Bus #1. So far, so good. My best guess so far is that Guest Additions allows Windows 7 to use the 2.0 bus as 2.0 even though it isn't enabled in VirtualBox. Enabling 2.0 in VirtualBox settings seems to break 2.0 support (strangely) meaning HD500 Edit and Monkey can't communicate with the HD500. Disabling 2.0 in VirtualBox settings fixes everything.

I'm hoping someone can confirm these default behaviours for me (not strictly Linux-related, but in context)...

1. With a standard Windows or Mac OS, does synching when you first plug in the Pod load all your presets, or do you (as I do) have to click receive all in the Edit software? Synching for me just loads the currently selected patch on the HD500 and all the other patches and setlists are blank (new tone) with the error message about not being able to load one or more patches.

2. How long should it take to load all the presets? It takes about 30 seconds for me (and jt).

I have tried following the directions in the synching error message to unplug the HD500, reboot and try again, but it doesn't prevent the error message from appearing. Despite the error message, everything seems to work fine after that.

So I'm happy that everything works with VirtualBox (with that one weird exception). Now if I could understand why changes made to presets on the HD500 itself and then saved don't persist, I'd be very happy. I haven't tried in the Edit software but after two or three coffees I might.

db

OK, insomnia, so I enabled USB 2.0 under settings/USB in VirtualBox, fired up Windows 7, it installed the USB 2.0 drivers; I connected the HD500, opened HD500 Edit and it couldn't connect, with an error message about needing a flash memory version 1.30 or later. I opened Monkey, and it couldn't determine the flash memory version. Strange. I have 2.02 installed.

So I shut down Windows, unchecked the 'enable USB 2.0' box in VirtualBox, rebooted Windows, connected the HD500, opened Edit, connected straight away, same initial error message "could not load one or more patches", then it took maybe 30 seconds to receive all the presets from the HD500 (is this a normal amount of time?) and I can see them all in the Edit window.

So I have some fiddling around to do, to see what is happening with VirtualBox and USB. It's 0120 now, so I'm probably rambling. Bedtime!

Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

db

Hi Johan and thanks toneman

So far everything seems to be working just fine. I have downloaded tones and setlists and saved them successfully, and sent them to the HD500. Synching happens very quickly, although I do get an error message about not being able to retrieve all the patches or presets or something when I first connect. I can see all the different setlist and patch names in the Edit window so I don't know if this means anything. As I'm new to the HD500 I haven't got round to checking the current 2.02 firmware's presets against a list. I'm still learning how to use the Edit software so I'll keep you updated if I find anything that doesn't work.

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with the 3.2.0-30-generic kernel, and VirtualBox 4.4.12_ubuntu r77245 with Windows 7 Home Premium as guest OS.

Have you checked the USB filter in VirtualBox? I just rechecked mine and for some reason the 'enable USB 2.0' box isn't selected, so I'm wondering if the error message is related to this. I do plug the HD500 into a USB 2.0 port, so maybe I have a similar issue to you? Mm. It's late here so I'll report back later today.

db
