Low strings sound choked off/warble on alternate tunings

I always assumed the strange notes I heard on my jtv when using alternate tunings was a result of my ears hearing the standad pitch strings conflicting against the amplified alternate tunings. I wanted to find out for sure, so I put on a fresh set of strings and got to testing. I also lowered all pickups on the bass side so they were flat to the pickguard and raised the low e string. The low strings all sound fine when going through the mag pickups. The piezo pickups sound pretty good on standard tuning, but they sound wrong when playing any of the detuned modes. Strangely, the high three strings sound fine when detuned.

I recoreded this clip with my headphones and pc speakers off. I starte out in standard tuning, then drop d, then baritone, and finally back to standard. There was no amplified sound to phase out the piezo sound. The low strings (here only the e string) sound warbling and choked off. I did try the various firmware versions and the 1.7x seems to exhibit this behavior less that the latest firmware.

Wondering your thoughts on this.

I opened a support ticket a week or more back asking if they knew when it would be ready. They said no. The first I caught wind of it was an add in either premier guitar or a sweetwater catalog. Quit teasing us!

I use nines on my jtv-69. Acoustics sound fine to me.

I generally add some reverb and sometimes use an eq. I don't use any amp or speaker sims when direct recording variax acoustic models.

The acoustic guitars are position 5 and 1, plus the banjo. The acoustic guitars used drop d tuning while the banjo track used dadgad.

I have my variax going into a M13, then into a mark V via the 4cm. Is the input source a setting only in the pod hd500?

I have noticed the electric models on my variax are much, much louder than the pickups on all my other guitars. Not just a little louder, but a lot louder. It even causes some unwanted overloading of my amps input. I recently reduced the volume output for each pickup by 5 db. I may lower it even more.

Just curious, for those of you that have lowerd the output, how much did you lower it by?

Yes, my mag pickups were too close. I used the screw on the bass side to lower just that side. I lowerd it until the strings sounded correct to me (not choked off sounding).

Check to see how close the mag pickups are to the strings on the treble side. I just put new strings on my 69 and also was experimenting with the pickup height. I had a similiar problem, but on the the bass strings. The bridge pickup was my problem. I lowered it as I played and could hear the models come back to life on the low strings.
