Excellent thorough work, and your classification of the 4 types of outputs is clear and concise.
Re: Why Line 6 over other FX Units ?

I don't know the Nova, but over the years (and over 10,000 gigs) I've had quite a few multi effects units. I never wanted or needed amp modeling and so was very excited when the M13 and M9 appeared. I bought the M9: not too big and I like having 2 or 3 pedals up front in the chain anyway... just using the M9 for mods and delays. It sounds gorgeous, and it's so easy and quick to change parameters on the fly (just like real stompboxes). If I was playing a show where I wanted exactly the same sounds /combination of effects for various sections I guess a traditional multi effects thing with lots of programmable patches would be the best option, but actually the M13 and M9 have a latching scene mode where you can indeed quickly change from one overall sound/combination of effects to another (On the M9, 6 scenes available with your foot, and then more 'folders' of scenes available with a knob tweak), but you can't name patches The effects are great (warm and fluid), and with added expression pedals you can tweak any/all of the parameters in real time.....and you can tap tempo of delays and mods...the best box I ever bought.

For what it's worth, I managed to update my M9 using my Focusrite Saffire Pro14 firewire interface and Midi-ox. Been a while, so can't remember the exact procedure; had a problem at first, but I remember having to muck about a bit with the 'delay' (buffer) setting (in midi-ox) and also tried different 'firewire latency' settings in Mix Control. I might have adjusted the buffer setting in Mix Control as well (not sure). Eventually worked fine. Perhaps, as Phil_m suggests, firewire is tricky, but I can assure you that with a bit of fiddling it works. Another thing is the Focusrite driver. I had problems generally with my Focusrite until I used the 'legacy' driver (even though the Focusrite site advised that I didn't need it for my system). Long story, see the site, but might be relevant.

Re: Are any of the M9 Chorus' TRUE Stereo Chorus???

Hi,

I'm sure the 3 chorus' output a stereo field. I wonder whether you have an active mono effect after (downstream of) the chorus, as that will sum the chorus stereo to mono.

Just to elaborate (this is what I hear):

ANALOG CHORUS: The chorus effect is mainly L, R is pretty well dry.

TRI-CHORUS: Depth 1 affects mainly L, Depth 2 affects R+L, and Depth 3 affects mainly R.

DIMENSION: The L and R wave forms are 180 degrees out of phase. Also, there is some weird and wonderful subtle cross feedback going on.

By the way, and sorry to be pedantic, but just to keep the terminology standard, TRUE stereo means that the effect retains the stereo field of an upsteam effect...eg, the M9 stereo delay is true stereo; put the Flying Pan before it and you will still hear the pan as well as stereo delays. In this sense, the M9 chorus' are not true stereo, because they sum their L and R inputs for processing. (Put stereo delay before chorus, turn chorus mix to 100%, you'll lose your stereo delay). But of course, what you were asking was ' do they output in stereo?'.

This will likely not sound very good, or at least not like you'd expect.

And indeed each amp has become a slave (referring to original post) of the other.

By the way phil_m, in your setup, you say you split the signal before M13. I guess you mean into M13 L and R, but as your source is mono (guitar), would not just going into L (mono) achieve the same thing.....I'm assuming the stereo effects loop splits a mono input?
