You should not use the included cable for anything other than updating the Variax or tweaking with Workbench. There is no protective shell around the connector that goes into the guitar, and in a short amount of time you will ruin the jack in the guitar. A very expensive repair... Only use a real VDI cable, you can find them online if you don't want the heavy Line 6 version. The shell makes sure that the plug doesn't wiggle around in the guitar's receptical breaking the small contact wires. I believe that's why you were having dropouts. It's in the manual...

It actually fell out of my gig bag onto the parking lot(I accidentally "relic" ed it) and other than a broken tuner, it's been perfect. I've probably done 40 rehearsals and gigs with it. I bought a 59 in December, haven't had it long, but it's been perfect too. I actually like playing the 59 better, it seems like a slightly better instrument, but the 69 is very good too.

I have found that the tone controls on the Variax's don't work quite like a regular guitar though. There seems to be a midrange boost as you roll off treble.

If that's not what you're looking for, you probably bought the wrong product because the HD500 has many ways to screw things up. As far as the 50/60 cycle hum goes, some people think it's an integral part of a tube amps tone and effects the waveform of low frequencies. You can always dial it down if you don't like that effect.

Re: Dream Rig Volume Normalization

I think your method would create noise and the possibility of distortion . By reducing the mixer volume to -29 and maxing the master you are basically pushing the brake and accelerator pedals at the same time. Also, since you've maxed the Master volume, how do you increase the overall volume of the amp if you need a bit more.

Here's what I do that makes things much easier:

- if there is a large difference in overall level between 2 amp models(the Twin Reverb is very low), I put the Tube Comp at the end of my effects chain.

- I set the Threshold to 100 and then use the level control to get the two amp models in the ballpark. Not only does it help match levels, but the Tube Comp doesn't color the sound other than adding a bit of tube warmth to the tone.

Hopefully this will alleviate some of the hand wringing about the different levels of amp models. I've talked to folks at Line 6 about this, and the party line is they model each amp "warts and all" according the actual gain of each preamp model.

I agree it would be more convenient to match the levels, but my workaround is easy for me. BTW, I'm gigging soley with the Dream Rig and love it. It does take a bit of time to dial things in, but I bet you could have 2-3 banks of patches set up in an hour or two.

The plastic shell is slightly larger than a Cat 5, and the wiggling of the plug in the socket will break the socket in fairly short order. The metal shells on the VDI cables help stabilize the cable and ensure it's sturdiness, but Line 6 definitely warns against using a standard Cat 5.

IOW, if your Pod is set to 48khz, then your project in Reaper must be set the same. I'm not sure if this helps, but it's another possibility.
