If you aren't going to use the DT-25 and just go straight to the board with your electric, you don't need to use the fx loop. You still can if you want more flexibility to mix the acoustic at the board, but you don't need to.

As for you question about patch setup, I have a bank where slot one is my acoustic model then slot two is a Les Paul with a Marshall, slot 3 is a LP with a Mesa and slot 4 is a tele with a Fender. It gives me flexibility to go from acoustic to electric in the middle of songs from different genres. Two examples are Ice Cream Man and Pink Houses. Really adds something to the songs to be able to do that. In fact on Pink Houses I flip the switch to put it in Open G. I love my rig! :-)

Speaking from experience I have to give a strong +1 to Phil. I stubbornly tried for a long time to get a great acoustic sound from my DT-25. I finally gave in and used the effect loop method and felt stupid for ignoring it for so long. It just didn't seem ideal to me. Really though it gives you the best results. I even have songs where I go from acoustic to electric and it works great. A little strange having the stage volume go from my amp to my PA monitor, but worth it.

Actually, it sounds like he is doing the opposite here. I have an HD500 with the DT25 mini stack. You need to use your HD just for preamp, NOT for full amp otherwise it is the equivelant of setting up an amp with a microphone then running the mic input into another amp. That creates some strange sounds. The thing to keep in mind is that many people are using the HD/DT combo to accomplish what MIles is trying to accomplish.

I will say that for me to finally achieve what I wanted it the final piece was to tweak the deep edit parameters of the cab models and find the right mic/cab combos for the amp. However, to start out with you need to use the preamp only models, because that way, the HD is modeling the preamps and the actuall head is taking care of the power section. That is the whole idea of the HD/DT combo.

I second this. Many have dealt with this issue and it seems to be the cab sims that are at fault. In addition to tweaking the deep edit Paramus on the cabs, experiment with different mic models. Anyway, EQ alone definitely does not do the trick and I can relate to that initial feeling of hopelessness I had trying to EQ it out.

I can say that when you get the right combo of cab and mic with an amp then dial in the deep edit params, you will get that "aha!" moment that allows you to get the tone you aye looking for. This was definitely the key for me anyway.

I have the EV ELX112P as well for my PA, but have tried it as a monitor for my HD500 and highly recommend it. Check americanmusical.com for "B" stock at $479.

When I was running FRFR before I got my DT25, I used a Roland KC-550 and loved it. I would definitely suggest trying that out as well if you want an amp behind you.

Yep, I went back and forth too. Wasn't worried about the money because the difference wasn't that much. In fact I was considering the DT50, but I wanted to reduce the weight and thought the DT50 would be too loud. Figured if I needed to move more air I would just get the 4x12 cab.

Absolutely! Make sure you have a bank of patches for both possibilities on the HD500 and a simple channel switcher and boost for the DT25 in your gear bag.

I also went to the DT25 and I use the head and cab. The main reason was actually weight as the two pieces separately are relatively light, but I also liked the flexibility to use a bigger cab if I want. I used to use a keyboard amp and honestly the convenience factor isn't big, just one extra cable.

I have used 4 different keyboard amps, a PE60, QSC K12, EV 112P and a DT25 mini stack. I used the keyboard amp solution for a long time. Started with the Behringer K3000fx which was good, but the woofer blew. Then I used the Peavey KB4 which didn't sound as good as the Behringer and was heavy, but it had wheels and a handle. Then I got the Roland KC-550 which sounds great. I would recommend that if you want a more traditional amp form factor. I have used the QSC and EV powered speakers which I thought were comperable, but the EV is much cheaper. If you just want a floor monitor I would suggest the EV. If you don't need FRFR, want the real tube amp tone and have the budget, get the DT25 (or 50). I like the stack because they are two relatively light pieces, easy to move and I have more flexibility with cabinet selection. I didn't like the Power Engine at all.
