It's been a while since I've been on the forums but I saw this thread and thought I'd post my experiences with the "dream" rig, most of which I believe you're familiar with.

The first HD500 I owned went back to L6 due to an internal problem of not getting power. They sent me a new one about 2 weeks later. Shortly thereafter I got a DT50. Both components seemed to be working well - excellent tones & just a lot of fun to use. I then got a Korean JTV-69. Several problems with that guitar - unable to intonate the high-E string, high-E neck slippage problem, and then the modelling stopped working until I re-flashed the firmware 3 times.

At that point, I sold it & got a JTV-69 US model. Played like a dream, beautiful finish, fantastic build quality. Then in April of this year, the modelling stopped working - everything came out muffled and distorted, even when I switched to the passive pickups. Within a couple of days, my second Pod bricked, the "looping L6 logo" problem. Unable to reset it as suggested on the forum. THEN the DT50 joined the party. After initial "boot up", no sound from either straight in or the L6 Link. Had to power off/on several times to get it to work. Sent the entire rig to L6. After about 3 weeks everything came back. I had initially wanted to sell everything but decided to give the rig one more shot. Played one gig. AFter that, my third HD500 bricked with the logo loop again. The recommended resets didn't work once again.

Thus endeth my 12 year relationship with Line 6. I got onto the forums yesterday just to see what was going on - I see I'm far from the exception for equipment failures. Granted, mine was more unusual: 3 HD500s, 2 JTV-69s, 1 DT50. My experiences plus what I've read over the last couple days speaks volumes about quality control - or lack thereof.

Despite this, their treatment of me as a customer and then as an ex-customer was nothing short of exemplary. Professional, cordial, going WAY above and beyond what they had to.

While I am enjoying my new non-Line 6 rig, I do admit that I miss the dream rig - for what you are able to do with the three components, nothing can come close. They seriously need to work on QC and build quality...at this point in time I would never recommend their products to anyone until (or if) things change.

As a former DT50 owner, the reason I'm a former owner is due to numerous failures of all components of my dream rig. In the case of the DT50, I would power it on & after "boot up", I'd get no sound regardless if I were using the Line 6 link or going direct to the guitar input. I would have to power it off/on 2-3 times to get it to work. The problem became progressively worse. After 5 other separate failures of my rig, I ditched Line 6. I haven't been on this board in several months & was wondering if it was just a run of bad luck with my stuff. After catching up on the support boards, it appears a LOT of people have had problems. FWIW, in 18 months I went through 3 HD500s, a Korean Variax, a US Variax, and a DT50. I decided that enough was enough.

You can't really compare the two products. Fractal has one modeler, Line 6 has many if you count the amps. R&D is done for all their products, Fractal has one, plus whatever new product(s) they may develop. I owned the Dream Rig and was very happy with what I could do with it, even if no further updates came out. Updates were the icing, not the cake. The sounds I got were great and it was a hell of a lot of fun to use when it worked.

Currently I own the Axe-Fx II. Got it a couple weeks back after numerous major failures of my Line 6 gear over 18 months. Expensive? VERY! Worth it? If it proves to be a reliable piece of gear, for me that is something you can't put a price on. It sounds great. It's complicated. However it's not comparable to the Pods for numerous reasons. So far though, I like it. Getting great tones as I learn more.

What I'm saying, besides the fact that you can't compare companies or products - differences in price aside - if it were not for all the equipment failures I had I would still be using the dream rig. I bought the equipment because it suited my needs at the time it was released, not because of what I hoped would be added down the road.

Sorry to hear that Nick. I'm in the same boat - tried all the fixes posted in the forum with no joy. After receiving my HD500 back from L6 last Wed., within 48 hours I got the logo of death. This is my 3rd HD500 failure in 18 months. Hope you can get it resolved.

I had a DC200 years ago & it was a tone machine but the neck was painful for me to play.

Nick helped me out both directly and indirectly, and was always a great person. I never had the pleasure of meeting him face to face but he was always pleasant to chat with & a great help on the boards. Nick, you will be sorely missed by all who had the good fortune of your help and your friendship.

Yes, it works best before an OD/distortion, whether it's built into the Pod or another external pedal in the FX loop.
