Guitarport and Apple Logic

I have used a Guitarport for years and mostly would just dink around with it, buy an upgrade here and there to noodle with things. Now I have started to get serious about recording and have been learning and using Logic the past month. I have learned about VST? plugins and realize wow, I can use all of my cool Line6 stuff right through logic!! Or so I thought. When I try to get it to work it says that I do not have rights or access to use Pod Farm in Logic, etc. Does this mean in order to use my Line6 software or guitarport I would need to buy an ilok or something?

Or do I just need to ditch the Guitarport and get a different Line6 unit...crappy thing is I have already bought a few model packs and what not so the thought of having just to pay to use it in my recording software stinks.

Perhaps there is a way to get it to work?

Warm Regards,

Ted

Powering a Variax & Workbench questions

I am purchasing a Variax that is NOS but the shop doesn't have the power supply or cables. It just has the gig bag and the battery pack? I am wondering what my options are for powering the variax besides batteries. I know I can use a variax RJ45 cable to a POD and the Line 6 unit will power it. In the future I want a Pod HD 500 which would power the variax with the specific cable.

I am interested in the workbench software. I am wondering if attaching this to my computer will power the unit so I can play it. For example, have the variax plugged into the USB device then have a guitar cord plugged into my guitar port or guitar amp. I have also read that the workbench software doesn't work with OS X Snow Leopard I guess I could boot into Windows XP but perhaps the workbench has been updated since I last read? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the information guys!

Nick, no hard feelings against Apple. I use to be a big PC fan and was actually training to be a MCSE for awhile, but the past two years I have been hooked on the Mac. Once I figured the Apple logic, I just prefer it. It does take it awhile though, and PCs are still great tools. I don't get the animosity between both camps, each respective tool has pros/cons and when the kool aid drinking commences I tend to shy away

Forgot all about the Fender Bassman Model, duh!

Sounds like I will have to do an interface tap dance for the time being if I want to use POD Farm. Unless sometime in the future Line6 bridges them together. I feel that once a person gets used to the HD they probably wouldn't like going back.

My technology skepticism is getting the best of me. I know the HD is rather new and I always like to wait awhile for the 'bugs' to be identified and worked out but I just want to jump on one of these.

Joe, I am a bit skeptical of picking up used Variax's for that reason but the prices can be great. I am trying to find a Guitar 300 because I prefer hardtail.

Flatwounds on a Variax Bass

I am looking into getting a variax bass, they seem so cool!

I prefer the feel of flatwound strings, but wonder if you can use them instead of roundwounds. My hunch is that everything is programed off of roundwound strings, which are brighter and have a certain zing. Would flats throw off the tones of the models? Or is it just a matter of sensing the vibration to create the modeling tone, so the type of string wouldn't be that big of a deal?

Thoughts?

Warm Regards,

Ted

Variax bass/guitar & HD500 Among Other Questions

Hey Everyone,

I have been a long time Line6 fan. I remember my first Spider, and I am still rocking a Guitarport. Figured it is about time to get with the times. The HD stuff sounds amazing. I am very impressed. I am also thinking of jumping on a Variax bass and guitar, so the HD500 w/ the variax accessibility seems like the right path to go. However, I have been trying to research a few things but have not been able to find much information, perhaps some of you can help?

I operate Macs on Snow Leopard, but I am able to boot into Windows XP Service Pack III. Will I have software compatibility issues with the HD500 and the Mac? It sounds like Line6 is working to resolve these issues, my PodFarm stuff works great with Snow Leopard.

Does the HD use Pod Farm or an entirely new interface? Can the HD work with Pod Farm so I do not have to connect the Guitarport to use my old stuff? This is important especially if I get the Variax instruments and want to use my Pod Farm bass amps, etc. I have a feeling that backwards compatibility is not a possibility....am I wrong?

Is there another way to connect a Variax instrument to your computer without having to use a Pod-type interface and still be able to use Pod Farm? Would rather take advantage of the ease of one wire between the guitar and computer instead of multiple ones to power the variax, etc.

Finally, does anyone know if there is HD bass stuff in the mix? I see on the HD menu something labeled 'bass'

Thank you everyone in advance.

Warm Regards,

Ted
