Re: Discussion: Guitarists' use of IEMs

We're headed towards IEM. Our lead vocalist just switched and it has made a big difference for her. Our setup to support this is somewhat complicated. We're looking at using a JamHub as a stage monitoring solution. A few months back I saw a show in a great club with the B-52's and Squeeze. The B-52's opened the show and used a traditional wedge setup. We were right against the stage and could clearly see that they suffered from being able to hear themselves clearly.

Then Squeeze came on. All floor monitors were removed. The stage was clear of the typical clutter. Their stage volume was so quiet that I could hear the acoustic drum kit clearly from about 30 feet away. (I've played gigs where I've been standing 3 or feet from our drummer and I can barely hear the kit). The mix out front was amazing and it was clear that the band could hear themselves perfectly.

In looking at the JamHub, we're hoping to bypass the need for the wedges which will reduce feedback and allow us to go with a much lower stage volume. The only problem is that we need to source each voice and instrument both into the FOH sound and the JamHub. With instruments, we can just run our own mics into the hub. With voices, we'll need to split the signal so we can have it in both locations. We're still working out the details and I'll report back in the future once we've ironed them out.

Re: Soldano volume levels

I think this is the expected behavior. I've played around a little with the SLO amps and noticed the level differences. I haven't taken the time to level them out yet.

Using the mixer settings in the HD500 (I use the Edit software), I'd maximize the volume of the clean amp and then on the distorted amp, I'd lower the level in the mixer. It takes a bit of adjusting to get them close and even days later you'll probably be making tweaks.

Hope this helps,

Brent

I'm sure some of the power tweakers can provide some good info for you but I thought that I'd mention that where you place the effect in the chain has a pretty big impact on how it sounds. If you take a chorus setting and move it before compression or distortion it will have a very different sound than if you place it at the end of the chain. Using the Blackface as a clean preamp (also have a DT25), I'm able to get a very glossy chorus (adding a delay helps as well).

Re: HD500 Pro - live use question

Hey Jake,

I went through several changes along the way in incorporating the HD500 into my live rig. I started off similar to your current situation, the HD500 replaced my pedal board. At the time I was going into a Line 6 Spider IV 120. It was not a good mix as the amp modeling fought with the HD500 modeling. I then replaced the amp with going directly into the house mixer from the HD500 (I kept a small PA monitor for my stage sound). The sound was really good but I had difficulty keeping the level changes between patches under control. Because the house soundman was somewhat inattentive, it was somewhat of a problem.

Finally I settled upon the DT25 Combo amp as the solution for me. I would suspect that if you have an effects loop in your amp you should be good to go. I've also reduced my number of live patches from a unique patch for each song in the set down to 3 main tones with the footswitches enabled to toggle various effects. One of the deciding factors in this for me was that it does take a fair amount of tweaking to keep your levels even. This is because the different amp models have a vast difference in volume levels. If you have the time, it is possible to get the levels right. I used a simple db meter app on my iPhone to adjust the levels.

The bottom line for me is that I'm able to get remarkable tones and I always have the option to tweak them or switch them up. It's like having a new amp available whenever you need it without having to purchase it.

If you need any more info, let me know.

Brent

Re: Can I use my new POD HD 500 as an audio interface to run loops and a click track?

I do believe this is possible. I use Studio One Pro and at times have used my HD500 as the interface. I've played along tracks as I've added guitar parts. Since the DAW software can use your PC or Mac to generate synth sounds on the fly, I think you could play along with them. Since the PC is used as the synth engine, what it sends out to the interface should be real-time rendered audio. The midi tracks would have to have been sequenced ahead of time and processed by the PC instead of outboard midi gear.

Hope that helps.

Brent

We recorded the guitars with the HD500 and some with the HD500 and DT25 Combo. We definitely don't fit into the shredder category, more like an 80's New Wave band.
