Compressors, Transient designer & Pick Attack control

Anyone got a cunning way to create a "pick attack" effect with the HD500?

I was thinking maybe with one of the compressors as it's a related effect. For those that don't know the transient is the attack part of a note, for guitar that's often where the pick sound is, so on the much touted KPA for isntance you have a control for it that they call "Pick Attack", which in their case is a part of their amp sim (possibly the best place for it, but i'd still like to be able to do is as an effect).

Now I'd been thinking, with a compressor you can maintain transients with the attack control (which causes the initial loudest part of the note to be ignored and the remainder of the note to get compressed) and set a low make-up value so that it just made the rest of the note quite, and if you just boosted the final result you'd get a louder transient or pick sound with a same volume rest of the note.

The trouble is none of the compresors on the HD series offer attack or release (or even make-up). They're all really just boosters/limiters. Does anyone know of another effect in there that could be made to do this? Some workaround?

Re: POD HD (Bean, Pro and 500) Edit v. 1.06 available

Where's the list of what's changed in this version? I assume quite a lot under the hood as it's 3 versions on from the previous, but I only see the Hard Gate added.

If I can make some suggestions (again). I think HD Edit could od with a little polish.

1) Cacheing - It takes about a minute to download all of the patches, every single time it opens, and if you touch anything on the Pod during that time it crashes. What should happen is that Pod HD Edit sends a "lock" message to the HD first, then compares a stored unsigned integer "dirtyness" value on the unit to the local "dirtyness" value, this value is incremented each time a preset is saved (with adjustments), or firmware is updated. If the values do not match then just download all the presets if your system cannot handle dirtyness bits per patch, otherwise use the local cache as it should match what's already on the unit. Once done send the unlock message to the Pod. Done. This will speed startup massively (and coincidentally automatically give users a local version of every preset that they can acess without HD Edit being open).

2) Menus - This really needs to be adjusted/rearranged.

 a. The "Off" value (labled "---") should never be the last entry in a menu. It should be the first, normal human behavior and training with existing interfaces has people generally beleive that things have some sort of order to them, usually least to most. Hence it's actually more natural to go to the first entry to expect nothing. On top of that it really should be possible to simple remove an effect without having to scroll through a menu. Select, press the delete key or whatever.

b. Scroll position on open - With large menus such as the amp list it currently attempts to scroll so that the currecntly selected entry is at the top of the menu when it's opened. This is extremel annoying as it means most of the time you're left to look at the "Pre" amps, which personally I never touch as I'm not a Metal Fartmeister. It means that to use the full amps you're constantly scrolling. Instead items should be placed as centrally in the menu as possible. If your'e close to the top then lock to the top, if you're close to the bottom then lock to the bottom. But on open of a long menu a user would expect to see the current selection bang in the middle so they can select to either side of that entry without scrolling (or using arrow keys and working blindly).

c. Menu length and grouping - The amp menu really needs to be grouped into submenus. Pre's and Full's (or there should be a small switch next to the master section to "disable" in the HD Edit software, i.e. just pick the amp then quickly enable or disable the pre only model without having to dive through a menu in HD Edit. It'll come to the same thing, but right now having a massive menu is not very ergonomic and slows down patch creation and exploration.

3) Exit behavior - When you quit HD Edit currently and there's a patch that's not synced HD Edit just exits, it doesn't ask you if perhaps you've made a mistake, or if you want to sync any patches that haven't been synced. It just quits. That's nice and fast, but it really needs to offer the courtesey. It's just too easy to rush off and quit without thinking or accidentally press the close button or shut down in some other way and lose your fantastic patch edits you've been making. With just a simple "You have unsynced patches open : Send them, Cancel, Quit anyway" quite a lot of heartache could be avoided and it'd look much more polished.
