Amp choice with X3L

So after a few years trying the X3L with a tube amp at church I've decided to join the rest of the world & use a non-tube amp. I just can't get it to sound right. It doesn't matter where I put the controls on the amp, it just sounds bad to my ears. Narrowed it down to 3:

Fender Mustang

Spyder

Vox Pathfinder

We're only talking about a stage monitor amp; the direct outs to the board are fine. X3L out to the amp is Live (combo front) mode, factory preset focus/high/low.

Any suggestions much appreciated, thanks.

Well, it's not the front hole (where I believe the Wah Switch is), but the pivoting cylinder that's toward the middle. You're right, there's a foam shield that came unglued, allowing light to enter through that opening. I was able to duplicate the problem in sunlight, bummer because had it been the front part it would've been easier to fix.

For now I'll leave it alone, while searching for a suitable material to cover that piece without affecting the pedal function. If I can figure out how to safely remove the pedal I can build a type of bellows to attach to it, otherwise it'll be temp fixes, which I don't like.

IMO, it's a cheap design but no worse than digitech using binder clips for their switch springs.

Thanks again Silverhead. I'll post pix when I get something going.

My other presets are all pretty close to each other per the manual, should I try a different amp for the "Intro" preset, or raise the channel volume (db level on the display)?

I thought about just making both T1 & 2 the Soldano, lowering some drive & vol on T1. I really like the Solo preset, as I do the Breathe/Reprise; they are spot on to my ears.

Thanks for any tips

Re: Direct (XLR) Output

Silverhead is of course correct, the output settings are not global. I thought they were; when I set the focus/highs/lows for the live outs they stayed that way on all subsequent patches/presets, so I assumed they were fixed, they're not. You just have to change them & save the preset, the new settings remain with the preset as he said. This is true for both Live and Direct outputs.

Even more so then does the Y cable make sense- it doesn't matter whether you have panned right, left, mono etc, you'll get both sides, then if you get a chance to use two mixer channels you don't have to change anything. The only Caveat is if you have a mic or variax, etc for tone 1 and something else for tone 2 you can't split them R&L, you would have to use separate out cables.

Thanks Berger Meister & Silverhead!

ps. I made my own Y cable- the total was only $5.73. You can buy one made for about $25.

pd

Re: Aren't the left outputs always mono/mixed when used alone?

I'm enjoying this thread, (and have a similar thread in the "X3L" forum also)!

One thing that seems to be a solution, for me anyway, is simply to use an XLR "Y" adapter. This way you don't need to worry about losing any part of the signal, whether it's stereo, mono, panned whatever- you'll get everything through one single cable. When you are able to use two inputs to a mixer you get the same thing, just separated.

I don't know anything about the HD series, but from these questions/comments the same is true as it is on the X3L; the 1/4" "live" outputs have a mechanical switch that combines the two when only one plug is inserted. This is impossible on an XLR jack, so you get either left or right- but not both- if you only use one output, unless you change output settings, ie; pan, etc which is complex and you may forget what you did. I know I will.

My opinion is that none of these questions would exist if the manual simply stated this, in plain English, (or whatever your language is). I couldn't even tell from the Signal layout in the appendix section, and I'm a former Electronic Technician!

I didn't post a link to it, but for about $25 you can get one already made, or if you're handy with a soldering iron and have some good mic cable laying around you can buy two female and one male XLR connectors for about $5 online and make a Y adapter yourself.

pd

You know know a lot more about this device than I do, but I thought when I setup the output (focus, etc) on whatever preset I was on it "followed" on the others.

I'm at work right now but tonight I'll try it again.
