I find it hard to get a good usable sound with this effect.

The effect is way to dynamic. When the overall sound is still

Quite low, I get occasional huge volume spikes and terrible

Feedback with some vowels. At the same time I still don't get

A clear, pronounced vocoder effect. Not usable at all.

I use a Variax 700 electric, connected with the VDIi cable and

A Sure SM Beta on the XLR input. Input selector 1 on Guitar/

Variax and input 2 on Same.

Tried it with only the vocoder effect in the chain and also with an

Amp in front or after. Does the addition of an amp model make any

relevant contributions to the tone at all?

I read somewhere that producing a fairly loud vocal signal

Makes a lot of difference. Is this true? And how about the tone/pitch

Of the vocal? Does that make any difference?

Would love to know how to make good use of this effect, also

In live situations! The feedback and occasional clipping with

Some vowels is just not ok, the way I use it now.

Actually, I've overlooked the Vetta Wah, maybe 'cause I wanted to "believe" in the more vintage models.....?

You're right, backing off the mix a bit with the Vetta seems to give me that mid-growl that I was looking for. That quacky break-up point in the middle of the pedal sweep, right before it goes into the treble area!

Yes, I might give that a try. The thing is then, that I can't really switch the effect on and off, like I'm used to do. I will have to create seperate patches for "leslie on" and "leslie off"...... But ok, it's worth a try!

Oh and I would like to know people's favorite wah's on the HD 500!

I can't seem to find one that has a good growl/quack (Think Voodoo Chile intro.....)

I place them in front of the entire chain, before any overdrive.

Hi everybody!

I like the sound of the rotary effect on some of my SRV/Texas Blues-like patches. I just noticed that this effect really "eats" a lot of the original tone, I think more than its equivalent in the X3 generation did...... Ofcourse I could adjust the mix between the dry and the effect sound, but the "leslie-effect", just like for instance the tremolo effect, seems to come across best with a more extreme mix-setting.

I tried putting it before the amp, but then I'd lose the stereo effect and that's one of the real charms of a rotary.

Anybody any suggestions?

Hi Mrmykl,

Yes I agree totally! I'm a long time X3L user as well and despite the fact that I think the HD500 is in many aspects a huge improvement on the X3 generation, I really miss a good acoustic path.

On the X3L I always use the modern preamp (the Avalon model) that's primarely intended to be a vocal preamp.

However, I really get a very good (warm and bright) acoustic tone when using it with my Guild acoustic, using the microphone XLR input with the build in condensator mic in the guitar.

Really nice tone! I always get compliments about it.

It's this (and the lack of routing options that the X3L has) that I really really miss in the HD500, even though it appears like the HD500 has all the potential I/O available.......

This still stops me from using the HD500 as my main stage gear, since I play a lot of acoustic guitar as well and I don't feel like bringing extra preamps and pedals just for the acoustic, if I can do everything with one device.

In short; YES, a good acoustic (pre)amp and a way to route the acoustic patches exclusively to the XLR outputs (straight to the mixingdesk/PA) and not to the 1/4 inch out's ( electric guitar amp) , would be a major improvement for me!!
