Bru and GTLazer are both talking about variations on a some tried and true pedal orders. Basically, gain stuff before preamp, and time stuff afterwards. Which is a huge oversimplification. If you start there - distortion->preamp->delays->reverb - and then move some things around, you'll find what you like. I tend to break with with tradition in regards to my phaser - like GTLazer, I place mine after the distortion.

Filter effects like phasers, wah and EQ when placed before distortion tend to be muted and understated - while placing them after distortion makes them more distinct and exaggerated.

As far as what order you put your distortions in - that deals with something called "gain staging," which is not something I feel the Pod emulates particullarly well. With "real pedals," the prevailing wisdom is to put a throaty, mid-boosting overdrive first and follow it with a more even-eq'ed, "amp-like" distortion pedal. Something like say a tube screamer into a Fulltone OCD. I sometimes run a real tube screamer in my effects loop right before my amps - using the tube screamer to boost the distortion on the HD500's amp emulation.

Also - shameless self promotion - I have a website of free guitar lessons. It'd be awesome if you checked it out and let me know what you think.

http://scheater5.blogspot.com
