Re: JTV-69 Volume Control malfunction?

jamhr001 wrote:

So in the end, it was the Guitar Model Select switch, and a little bit of impatience on my part, and the failure of Line 6 to recognize and (not document but) trumpet an obvious design flaw in the JTV-69's GMS switch, that caused all the frustration. Too tired to celebrate.

The switch can be pressed down too far, at least on my guitar and one other, and this apparently causes something not to fully release, some switch to fail to open or close as it should, which acts somewhat similar to what might happen if your computer keyboard had a Return key stuck in the depressed position.

(snip)

Any of you crickets know if Line 6 has a washer or at least a suggestion on how to keep the GMS switch from going too low? It does happen after time with normal use. At least I know how to fix, but eventually it will loosen if I keep moving it this way.

I find it incredible that this problem persists in production instruments. It's not that something fails to release, though. The problem is that if the knob slides down too far on the control shaft it (the knob) will physically bottom out before pushing the shaft far enough to engage the model/magnetics switch.

Line6 should consider making a re-tooled knob available for folks (like myself) who've seen this issue. In the meantime, pull the knob off gently, drop a little circle of cardboard (about 1/16" thick to start) in the hole and carefully push it back on. Exercise it a few times. If it's still intermittant, pull the knob off and add another shim. If two of them don't do it, you may have other problems with that instrument and should contact Line6 for a warranty repair.
