My personal opinion is that the design is very solid....Whatever this deal is with the power trannies is some sort of parts quality logistics issue...I don't see it as a design defect...

It seems likely to me that when an attenuator is used, the amplifier is likely running at a higher volume than when an attenuator is not used....When more current is passing though the circuit, this tends to reveal isssues with components that could be out of tolerance or striaight out defective...Hence, using an attenuator might reveal something like this a little sooner...Not because it is an attenuator (it's just a load), but because the power amp is likely passing more current that it would be without one...

Re: HD500 with pedals in the loop

I use pedals with my HD Pods...I have an HD Desktop and HD400...The pedals are a Boss NS-2 Gate...In the send return of the Boss is a Strymon OB.1 comp, Boss auto-wah, Boss FZ-5 Fuzz and a modified DS-1...Basically GTR->NS-2->Pod GTR input...Gate, Comp, Wah, Fuzz, DS-1 I always want first before anything.

I also have a boss analog delay and boss flanger...Those I prefer after the preamp...With the HD400 it's pretty simple, I just stick those two in HD400 FX loop and set it post. I use a DT50 and DT25 on the link with that setup and generally will use the reverb in the DT's. With the HD Desktop it's a serialized setup with the Top chain is before the amp and the right chain is after...This allows me to 4CM the desktop into the amp I am using and with use the HD amp model or the preamp in the amp I am using...inject the delay and flanger before the reverb...

Anyway, my own opinion in terms of the pedals you have is that I would likely run GTR->Comp->Distortion->POD GTR input...I think I would put the EQ into the HD500 FX Loop...I used to have my Comp in the HD400 FX loop with the Delay and Flanger....It has a fantastic clean boost and it can be a bit more effective coming after the amp model on higher gain patches...With the HD500 FX Loop you can stick it anywhere you want in the chain for particular patch...So if you are using a verb in the HD500 it is really a non issue to keep it on the end of the chain...if you had external reverb you could always run the main out into the verb, then to the amp...

You idea of not using the loop is valid...You can accomplish the same thing a couple of different ways...One thing not using the loop buys you is an extra FX block...
