Dr.Z question

Hey guys, I am having a hard time reproducing the non-pre version of the DR.Z amp model distortion with the pre model. I would simply use the non-pre version but it sounds very plastic and artificial through the DT25. To get similar distortion out of the DR.Z pre model I have to overdrive the tube section to about 2'clock. This is ridiculously loud. I play a pretty large venue weekly and cannot play anywhere near that level. I have added virtual distortion but it just does not have the same tone..

I have a feeling that the word "attenuator" may be coming my way..

Thanks guys,

Chris

Getting your head around the Dream Rig...

As I have been delving deeper and deeper into the tonal possibilities of the Dream Rig, I find myself more and more working to reproduce tones as natural as possible. I do this by using unique amp models to create distortion/tone instead of adding virtual effects to the signal chain. What I am getting at is that even in my open-minded attitude towards the Dream Rig I am still having a hard time simply listening to the tone and ignoring how the tone is created.

So advice from one Dream Rig owner to another:

Fill your effects to capacity OR only use an amp model and the tone knobs to achieve your dream tone.. Don’t be disappointed when you realized that you can either wake the dead to get that sizzling hot distortion or simply add an artificial distortion and have your volume at a manageable level, it will nearly sound identical... Line 6 has harnessed tonal magic in this gear, now its up to us to settle down and make awesome music with it.

Good luck guys!

Roaster, You can choose to use the balanced outputs of your HD to your monitors from your PC while simultaniously outputting guitar to your DT at the same time without crosstalk.

Advice to you:

Download "starter tones" from here: http://line6.com/customtone/browse/podhd500/

Then change the amp to a "Pre" version. This will help you to get some tones right away. Also pay close attention to your effects to the relation of your signal path in your tone models.

I play live weekly and this rig cannot be beat.. It's insane what you can do.. Just keep plugging away.

Chris

Realize if you use this method of connection you will always need to keep your battery charged in your JTV and you will lose patch controll of your models.

My opinion- use the guitar models to suit your taste on tone and go full digital. A full digital connection chain is the highest quality possible.

Hey Guys, I received my second JTV-69 yesterday. I sent my first back to the dealer because of the same issue you are having here along with a model knob that when pushed would not engage/disengage very easily. I also found that the action on the guitar was not setting up properly and tuning was an issue.

I received my replacement guitar, plugged it in tuned, stretched and tuned again.. Got the tremolo flat and started to test.. Unfortunately the new guitar was worst than the last.. Way worst.. HOWEVER the action on it was WAY better -along with the model knob being much better too.

I have been playing, modifying and setting up guitars for many years so I decided to fix it myself instead of sending it back again.

I unloaded the strings and springs and found three problems.

1. The easiest problem I found was that the wires going into the computer compartment from the bridge piezo’s were rubbing when the bridge pivoted on the posts.

Fix: Bend wires to cause the least amount of contact with wood, I also put a thin grease on the wire in case of contact. I noticed that the plastic insulator on the wires had a tacky feeling when it rubbed against the wood without lubrication.

2. The second problem I found was that the bridge blade that hits the posts were scored and one was burred.

Fix: I cleaned the contact areas and de-burred them, I buffed the spots with a Dremmel tool buffer to make it perfectly smooth. I also lubricated the contacts with a thin lubricant using a toothpick to apply.

At this point I thought I had fixed the issue. While pushing against the rear end of the bridge I pivoted bridge back and forth on the posts and could not perceive much resistance but then realized that ANY resistance would cause an issue. I needed to see what would happen if I pivoted without any force against the back of the bridge. The only way I could do that is to invert the guitar on the ground. Once I did that I could easily pivot the bridge without pushing against it. -I found more resistance.

3. A part of the bridge assembly rubs the inside of the guitar. I Brightly lit the inside of the guitar and saw that there was a doughnut looking nut around the point of where the tremolo bar is inserted -the nut is on the back side of the bridge. The nut is metallic and grooved and was slightly hitting the inside of the routed wood.

Fix: Remove the bridge and sand the inside of the routed area that the metal nut was rubbing.

note: I do not think doing this would be advisable for people to do without experience -you could easily slip and ruin the finish on your guitar!!

After re-assembling, tuning and adjusting my JTV-69 is amazing!!

I played a gig the same night and the guitar sounded and played amazing with zero tuning issues. The neck and sound are perfect. I am sure this guitar will be with me for a very long time!

I hope this helps!
