Re: DT25 with Rivera Rockcrusher/ attenuator

I am using a RIVERA Rockcrusher with a DT50/212 and a 2x12 cab (16 ohm as the combo wattage load) since 1 year and I am gigging with it too. I therefore 2 x 16 Ohm load which I connect to the attenuator in parallel which gives a total load of 8 Ohm.

I had a different attenuator (SPL reducer) before and was not completely satisfied with the coloring the attenuator did in lower volume modes.

The sound coloration of the RIVERA is very minimal due to original sound I would say. It also helped me a lot in the past during gigs in small locations where I had to bring my overall volume down and still maintain an acceptable tube driven guitar amp sound.

The RIVERA is a high end attenator with some features which not every attenuator has:

- you can switch between 8 and 16 Ohm load

- you can easily add a second speaker box in parallel to your combo

You can bring your volume down to an absolute bedroom level running your POD HD with pre amp models and DT25/50 in full power mode. But of course in such a very low volume mode the overall sound is not as good as if you have reduced it by let say -3db.

I personally do not use the Attenuator for such low volume levels, because I am practicing at home like you with the POD HD 500 and AKG-headphones (K 271). It is very much more to adapt at rehearshal and to specific gig locations where we are forced to reduce the overall band volume.

Whether the additional price of a RIVERA is really justifiable - I honestly do not know. But I wanted to be on the safety side and was therefore prepared to spend some more coins to avoid potential amp defects. But attenuators like Dr. Z airbrake, Weber should be also okay. At least that is what I have read in these forums. You should choose one with enough wattage (I would add at least 25-50% more wattage than your amp to cover peaks). And I would recommend to choose one with variable Ohm settings, so this a investment you can use also with other amps, boxes in the future.

Your 112 combo should have a 8 ohm speaker load. You can see this how the speaker is connected to the amp on the rear of your combo. In principle you need an attenuator which matches your speaker load (in your case I think 8 Ohm). Then you connect the speaker to the power attenuator speaker input and you need a cable to connect the attenutaor with your amp. It is normaly very self explained described in the manual. Thats it. No rocket science.

Attached is a photo of my guitar rig.

But it turns into a recording of various guitar tracks (Martin Acoustic model, and several Start-model tracks with a Marshall Plexi Lead Amp Model - please see for more details the infos on my video).

I have to admit that I was some how in sad mood, so my guitar turn inside out. Not new - a lot already out there on YouTube. It is just different. But this is with my JTV 59 (for more details on amp models, etc., please have a look at the attached Video link).

For Live-performing, I play the JTV 59 / 69 (one is of course always my Backup), a HD500, a DT50/212 together with a Marshall JVM 2x12 cab and a Rivera Rock Crusher (power attenuator).

It's a quite a long recording and I hope you will survive until the end :-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2SXYvhH5HU&feature=youtu.be

Always the good die young ...

Any thoughts are welcome.

I have tried to throw in the best I am capable to play in this song.

But there is still enough room how I can improve my playing style: I have some timing issues and I tend to play sometimes a too quick vibrato.

As there are already so many good articles from experienced users in these forums, I think that audio- or Video examples where you actually can hear JTVs sounding is a good supplement.

wolbai

I did the recording with my new Cubase Artist 7 - Version.

The playback I have used is not that bad (Vocals, Keyboard, Bass, Drums). And I recorded 2 Rhytm guitars and 1 Leadpart.

I needed to record the Solopart about 20 times until it sounded somehow okay to me. And if you need more horny skin on your finger tips: exercise the leadpart and you will get it!

I have just started to dive into the Solopart. Getting the feeling, the sound of Gilmour and letting the song breathing without playing too much is what the song is all about. Not real there at the moment. But as I am a great Gilmour fan, I will nail that (I hope so).

For the clean parts I have used my standard Amp BF Double (= Fender Twin Reverb) and the JTV69 with magnetic PUs in position 2.

For the guitarpart which partially dublicates the vocal phrases, I have used the Treadplate Amp model (= Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier).

For the Gilmor Leadsound I tend to use the Marshall Plexi Lead 100 (I think he played HIWATT Amps in the 70s if I remember correctly). The Leadpart is also played with the magnetic PUs on the JTV69 in position 5.

I tried to be as close as possible to the Solo in the initial part. Later I am improvising more in the Gilmour style.

To add a little more sustain to Clean to Gain Solo parts I tend to use the Overdrive Pedal with a Drive level of 20-35% pre amp. The Overdrive pedal keeps more the original sound of the amp than a distortion pedal to me.

I also used some other effects: 2 reverbs and 1 delay post amp:

Hall-Reverb (20% mix) ---> Dynamic delay (60% Mix) ---> Cave Reverb (3-5% Mix if I remeber correctly).

The presets are purely for the recording. And I use the Full amp models. From my HD500 I connect to an Audiointerface (TASCAM). For Live performance (in general pre amp models of the HD500 together with my DT50) the rig and the presets are different. The amp models and effects will be the same. But the parameters will very likely vary significantly. That is my experience from other songs in past.

http://www.soundclick.com/player/single ... i&newref=1

I am wondering what amp models and FXs are you using for a Gilmourish guitar sound. Any tips ??????????????

Thanks for reading and listening - any feedbacks are welcome!
