You can change a set of strings in 4 minutes and they stay in tune perfectly. They are not expensive either. Here is a link for your guitar: http://www.ecrater.com/p/8488729/planet-waves-auto-trim-locking?gps=1

I've replaced tuners on Gretsch (six on side) and Fender (in-line) headstocks using their drop-in tuners which were under $30 for the set and are staggered and locking, making string changes a breeze. This is a change I'm thinking of doing to my '89.

One thing I'm unsure of is the upside down headstock orientation on the JTV-89. I dont know if the tuners would drop in the way they did with the others. I think I have a set of in-lines that I was going to use on a strat. I'll line them up and let you know if they fit.

Sperzels can be reversed to match the headstock.

I would also like the finish to be black nickel.

?
