You could also try using SoundFlower http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower

which is a virtual audio driver for the Mac, so you send your audio to it then send its output to your preferred device, then set your recording to record from it (multiple channels are available).

You may also need LineIn http://rogueamoeba.com/freebies/

which allows you to route soundflower inputs to certain channels.

Hi,

I was having the same issue, but I was able to resolve this by doing the following:

You need the following two cables:

1. Male 1/4" Tip - 1/4" Ring to Male 3.5 mm Tip Ring Sleeve Cable http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=ProductDetail&A=showItemLargeImage&Q=&sku=160640&is=REG

2. Male 3.5 mm TRS (tip ring sleeve) to Male 3.5 mm TRS cable

Take the Tip - Ring 'Y' cable and plug each one into the 1/4" outs on the Pod HD 500. The other end goes into the audio in on the Mac computer

Take the other cable and go from the MP3 input on the Pod HD 500 to the Headphone Jack on the Mac computer.

Make sure that you have all of your patches on the Pod HD500 when you decide to record in iMovie because you must keep the Pod HD 500's USB unplugged as the other poster said it interferes with the direction of the audio.

Give that a try. I was able to successfully play backing tracks from youtube while recording video of my playing without any tedious syncing audio and video. The ouput from the HD 500's 1/4" outputs where you would have the Tip Ring 'Y' cable carries the mixed audio from the guitar and the mp3 input to the input of the Computer.

Make sure you click on the "mic" button in iMovie and select built in audio so it knows what audio to use.

You could play the backing tracks from the computer out the mac's headphone jacks and into the CD/MP3 in, and play along with that, and record the output into whatever you're using.

That is indeed possible. It is just difficult and tedious to synchronize the two. And it seems superfluous when I already have the audio I want to record coming out of the phones jack. It seems I should be able to record that.

I tried for some time to get Soundflower to do what I'm after, and I found the documentation quite unclear as to what Soundflower was actually doing, and I could not find any combination of settings which had the desired effect.

I'll be forever indebted to Line6 support and sing your praises far and wide if you can figure out how to do it with Soundflower or any other 3rd party app.

I've seen variations of my question all over various boards. It seems a pretty common use case to want to be able to make a youtube video as a one-step process without a lot of post-processing twiddling of overlaying audio on video and trying to sync it up through trial and error.

Hey anderson110,

This is happening because the applications you are using have the POD HD500 as the designated input and output device. So even though you can hear your backing tracks, these applications are only listening to input from the HD500. There is no way around that.

Although, its seems to me that if you have your backing tracks ready for playback within garageband, that you should be able to export that song as an audio file, and then just import that into the video software and lay hd500 track over it.

Your other option is to use a program called Soundflower, to digitally reroute the audio within your operating system from any application into another application. This might be able to help you out.

I have an HD500 connected to a Macbook using USB.

I am playing to a backing track (either through garage band or youtube, typically), and can hear everything fine through the headphone out of the HD500.

But when I record a video on my Mac of me playing, using either iMovie or Photo Booth, in both cases all I hear on playback is the guitar. No backing tracks either from youtube or garage band.

While it may be possible to record audio/video separately and then go through a production process of syncing them after the fact, that takes a lot of time and fiddling when all I want to do is just record what I'm hearing.

Why isn't that what's happening and how do I make it happen?
