I would advise to pickup a Spider IV amp rather than the POD unless you want more computer (recording, etc) usability. Note that if you get an amp, make sure you match the impedance requirements of the cabinet(s) used - solid state amps are very particular.

Using a POD, you should use the cleanest amp settings possible. Some effects (like reverb) work best post-preamp, so you would have to work with your POD and Spider 2 amp settings a lot to get the ideal combinations.

So I put in a support question, which was something like this:

If I purchase a POD, and use the effects and modeling from there, what would I set the Spider 2 up as? I would assume CLean Green or Red, and all the other stuff at 5, except for Modulation and Delay, which would be set to 0, and maybe reverb too, if that is going to come from the POD?

I guess this would get my access to the editing software, as well as the ability to trade custom tones online?

My other question is, would it be cheaper to pickup a Spider IV head than a POD on eBay? I figure I can recover $100 from the sale of my barely used Spider2 head, so if I go with the POD there is nothing to sell to recover funds...

I never though I would like Line6 stuff this much, I even want to get a guitar from them now too. What that pawn shop did for Line6 they will never know, I spend way too much on equipment. they gained a good customer from that little shop on the corner selling used amps for cheap.

The FBV is a controller only, nothing is stored in it. All the presets are stored in the amp.

From the manual, the Shortboard will "give you access to 32 more memory positions". Guess that was one way Line 6 guaranteed more Shortboard sales back in the early Spider days.

OK, I get it, no software for me because I have a Spider 2.

What about these presets? Does the FBV store the 4 x 9 banks (=36 total), or are the presets stored in the amp? I am thinking the extra 32 presets are stored in the FBV, but I have no way to know for sure?

I wanted to test this and bring my FBV to a friends house and see if the preset follow me over there when I plug it in.

If they are stored in the amp, then I guess the amp stores all 36 presets, but without a FBV you can only access 4?

Spider 2s don't have the software feature that lets you use Spider Edit. The only way to make tone changes is with the controls (amp ones, or the FBV) and then save them in the amp preset locations.

Hello,

I have a Spider 2 150watt and a 4x12 cab. I added the FBV Shortboard MKII and it works great. My issues are with the software, or lack there of?

I tried Spider Edit, but it says it is for the Spider 4's and not the 2's? So what could I use to edit and make presets and sound profile?

What works is manually making changes and saving them via the Shortboard. This works, as I have 9 "banks" with ABCD channels. However, if I want to rename a preset, I have to do it using the buttons on the Shortboard? My Windows XP see's the Shortboardm the driver installs fine, Monkey says the firmware is up-to-date. Do I need to buy one of the apps to get settings to transfer to the Spider 2?
