My JTV-69 arrived, and I'm happy to say that, as far as I'm concerned, the Rickenbacker 360/12 modelling is great. Not perfect, but certainly good enough for our bar gigs. I will post some side by side comparisons now that I have both an actual Ric 360/12 and the JTV, for your listening pleasure.

That is a great suggestion! I'm going to try that - you're amost describing "Ric-O-Sound", the standard stereo out built into the 360/12.

By the way, regarding your comment on "why Rickenbacker", I admit, these are really specialized guitars with a unique sound. Not very practical, and I can take 'em or leave 'em, but my band has a set list with a few Ric 360/12 songs in it, and a few that need a baritone, plus a slew of tuning changes. Being a small band, with no roadies , we had to either dump the songs from the set lists for certain gigs that were low on real estate for physical guitars, or (worse) put up with me changing guitars and enduring longer intervals between songs, where the singers would eventually run out of ways to distract the audience while I changed guitar/tuning. The Variax is (hopefully) a way to get all the sounds we need, and with low overhead. So in evaluating the Variax via Youtube, I satisifed myself that it could do everything I needed, except the Ric 360/12. Nobody has (to date) posted a clip of that mode, or those that have, don't play Ric-specific riffs, so it's hard to tell whether it is a good simulation or not. That alone should be a clue that the Ric sims are not that good, I suppose.

Just FYI, a lot of 12-string Rickenbackers are in the Beatles, Byrds and Tom Petty catalogs, as well as 12-string electrics (other brands) in R.E.M. We play something from all of their catalogs in our set list, unfortunately.

Is there a reason you prefer the rick 12 strings? I am not crazy about the rick sounds on the JTV but am not crazy about ricks in general.

I made my own 12 string variations in work bench. Do you use stereo set up live?

If so, you can try what I did. I lowered the volume of the non octave strings of a 12 string in workbench. I then swapped the pickups for filtertrons or similar as I hate brittle rick sounding pickups, but that is just personal taste.

Now we are left with just the octave strings sounding. Sounds like nashville tuning. So far so good.

Next set up a patch on the POD with mags going to one amp and models to another. Pan one hard left the other hard right. Put a delay set to 20ms on one channel with 100% wet to space it out even more. If you are anything like me, you won't miss the rick;-)

I agree with all of those who posted their perspective on your question.

My original impression with the first JTV running 1.70 then 1.71 was that the least improved models were the Ric 12-string models. While most improved from the original Variax guitars to the JTV guitars were the acoustic models which have yet again been changed in the JTV 1.81 update. Their are two side of this and I'm on the side of those who prefer the 1.71 acoustic models over the newer 1.81 models.

Still nothing has been done to improve the Ric 12-string guitars.

I would be happy to produce a video demo of both Rick 12-string models playing bits of well know songs using a Rickenbacker 12-string guitar like Tom Petty, The Beatles, etc.

If you still would like video demos of those models, I'd be happy to do very quick one-take demos and post them for you. I've done this for someone in the Dream Rig forum regarding the sound of all the acoustic models directly from just the Dream Rig set-up. They felt their acoustic sound were severely lacking, and asked for someone to post a video. I did and showed that although none of the Line 6 amps have tweeters, you can get pretty amazingly authentic acoustic sounds just with the JTV guitar (1.81 in my demo), a POD HD500, L6 Linked to my pair of DT50 1x12 combos.

Just ask if you are still interested.

I agree with litesnsirens -- don't sell your Rick even if you love your new JTV. I did that with a Gretsch Country Gentleman -- just got a new guitar and couldn't justify to myself to keep the Gretsch, so I sold it. I've regretted it ever since -- it was in the early '80's. Like the Country Gentleman, the Rick 360/12 is an iconic guitar....

I don't think anyone was recommending waiting to buy the JTV, I think they were recommending don't sell your rickenacker yet until you try out the JTV.

I agree! I love making the youtube videos but at the end of the day, it is all about your personal preference.
