Specifically you need to connect it with USB and use the drivers that way.

MIDI doesn't pass audio after all. And the X3L isn't a keyboard!

The X3 is not a general MIDI interface; it only handles MIDI program and parameter changes. You need a separate MIDI interface connected to cubase to record note on/off MIDI events.
