Is your OS up to date as far as updates? After changing usb ports as Rowbi suggested, make sure its connected directly to the usb port on the computer itself, bypassing any external USB hubs (powered or not).

Try a different USB port on your PC. Also disable any and all anti virus or firewall software:

I have seen similar issues on rare occasions caused by either of those... I.e. issues caused by internal USb hubs, or by AV software interfering withore over USB, which is used to update.
