The only problems I've had with Line 6 stuff is that some of it (namely the HD500 for me) can be so complex that it's really easy to get option paralysis. I might be better off with a 300 or 400 so I have less options to confuse me. However, those options are also the power of the unit. Seems like the 500 can do pretty much anything. Studio, home practice, live, through PA, through amp(s), etc. I don't wish I'd never heard of Line 6 gear...I wish I would spend the time to really master it (not sure if that's really possible though, it honestly seems like more of an art than a science).

On top of that basic "problem" the other problem I have is that messing with tones and such takes me away from what I really need to be working on....learning to play guitar lol. If I was already a good player, I'd be have a BLAST tweaking on these units.

Well, I've been using A POD X3 Live for over 3 years gigging - festivals, small venues, concert halls etc - running overdriven, distorted, high gain stuff sometimes through Marshalls and sometimes directly DI'ed into the venue sound system.

And it has never let me down. Took me a while to learn, but once I sussed it out all was good.

Bought an HD 500 last month and still in the learning phase, but already it is cleaner, more realistic and sharper.

Awesome piece of kit - wouldn't want anything else for a large festival gig: I can turn up with a couple of guitars and a rucksack and I'm done!

I use Line6 gear exclusively and I'm very happy. It's not like I can't afford what I want and I'm settling. I use a PODHD through the effect returns of a pair of JCM900s in stereo. Great tone, sustain, stereo effect, everything. Was it easy ? No. It's not going to hurt you to learn something new.

Yes the VAX700 series does work with the HD500. I joined an original prog band around 1.5 years ago and set up a lot of HD500 patches to switch between multiple guitar models on a JTV 59. I had a gig where i lost two strings and had no backup gtr so I dragged my Vax 700 out and set up a backup patch bank specifically for the vax 700 and it worked flawlessly.

When I first started playing (at home usually with headphones, hobby only), I got a Line 6 toneport UX1 and was very happy with it - major bang for the buck.

Next, I thought I would try moving up in the world a little and bought a Pod HD300. That was one year ago and I am still unable to dial in satisfactory tones. Very disappointed.

I am getting a Zoom G5 for Christmas. We'll see how that goes.

I'm still glad that I got involved with Line 6 gear, but it is not my go-to rig, by any means.

I find that for the live, indie R&R/Pop that I play, one of my Fenders ('66 Super Reverb, '66 Vibrolux Reverb, '75 [blackfaced] Deluxe Reverb, '68 Princeton Reverb, Twin Reverb with 6G16 Vibroverb P2P circuit) with pedals has much more clarity and presence.

For theater pit orchestra stuff I still prefer one of my three Flextone III's.

Even though my HD Pro is running through a 4x6L6 Mesa Boogie 50/50, I feel it is lacking when I A/B it to my Fenders. Obviously I am into mostly clean tones and naturally overdriven amps.

It is cool to play with and use for rehearsal and some recording, and I still use it live if my son and I are playing together...I only have one pedal board for the Fenders...but it's not my first choice.

I hear you, but I've been trying for days to get help with my HD300 drivers without success. I live in South Africa and calling the support centre (Which is the only option Line6 gives me) is not feasable. Who can help me sort out a problem which as far as I can see from the blogs, no one at Line6 seems interested in doing?

Yes I've checked all my cables, yes I'm not plugged into a hub, yes I've tried to download the newest drivers...since I've installed frimware 2.01 on the pedal no computer has been able to pick it up again.

Do the "old" Variaxs work with the HD 500 via cat cable? That might be the issue....Check 2.13 in the advance users manual. http://line6.com/data/6/0a06434dc1a55085c5d6532bf/application/pdf/POD%20HD500%20Advanced%20Guide%20v2.10%20-%20English%20(%20Rev%20A%20).pdf Set the Variax setting to "Variax 500/700. Is it global? I don't know....

An HD like powered DT wedge (so that your amp points upwards and is in front of you on stage like the QSC K12's for instance) would sell like hotcakes.....!
