Yep - you understand correctly. And the poster is a great visual reference.

The pickup selector switch mimics the modeled guitar's actual selector switch. A real Les Paul, with only two pickups, has a 3-position switch: Treble (bridge pickup), Mid (both pickups) and Low (neck pickup). The JTV models a Les Paul by using these 3 selector positions. But with 2 more available positions, it also models two other Les Paul guitars in one pickup configuration each.

The mimicry is more clear with the Spank (Stratocaster) bank. The same Strat guitar is modeled in all 5 pickup positions in the JTV, so it plays just like the real guitar.

the switch on the 59 makes it a little different... although all the same models/pickup configurations are still there.

Thank you for this clear answer. In your example above, if I understand you correctly:

The 2 and 4 positions give me two different Les Pauls, each with a single, preset pickup configuration
The 1, 3 and 5 positions give me same Les Paul but with three different pickup configs
So under Lester (without any Workbench customization), I have three different Les Pauls: one with three pickup variations (positions 1, 3, 5) and two with one pickup variation each (positions 2, 4)

Am I understanding you correctly? If I am, I will better understand how to read the manual.

The pickup configuration is part of the selected JTV model. Most modeled guitars have several JTV model variants, each of which uses a different pickup configuration. For instance, in the Lester (Les Paul) model bank the same model of Les Paul guitar is modeled in three different pickup configurations, corresponding to pickup selector switch positions 1, 3, and 5. Position 1 models the Les Paul with the bridge pickup alone; position 3 models the bridge+neck pickups, and position 5 models the neck pickup alone (or vice-versa; I get the position numbers mixed up sometimes). Pickup selector positions 2 and 4 in the Lester bank provide different Les Paul model/pickup configurations.

See the JTV manual for details of which guitars and their pickup configurations are modeled in each model bank/selector switch setting.

You can use Workbench (the Variax editor program) to change the models and load your custom models into your JTV.

I am new to JTV. When I am in modelling mode in Lester setting (for instance, but my question is relevant for any modelling setting), I switch between types of Les Pauls using the pickup toggle switch. Does this mean I can't control the pickup configuration when I am in modelling mode?
