Yes ... about 2 dB. Even extremely low noise electronics have some noise compared to wire only.

No one answered my question. Is it supposed to be slightly more noisy when connected? No guitar signal.

From the transmitter chord shorted: I get very very slightly more noise when shorted.

There is a benefit if the receiving end is balanced. But both ends have to be balanced for the system to work.

Please try this test. Instead of pluggin in your guitar short the end of the cable that normally plugs into your guitar (easily done with a paperclip). Does this noise get lower or go away?

So there's no grounding benefit to using the XLR instead of the 1/4" for guitar then?

Is it normal to have a slight noise increase when the receiver is plugged in? If not, "how" and "why" would it induce a slight hum into the system?

You should match the output jack type of the receiver to the input jack of whatever you are plugging into.

Are you using a standard 1/4" plug ... 2 conductor and not 3 conductor (TRS)?
