I like using near field studio monitors for the UX2, PODxt and POD HD. It won't be exactly the same as playing thru a PA at gigging volumes, but it will be much closer than a regular guitar amp. Or you could go with a decnet FRFR power amp and speakers.

For headphones I use a set of Sony MDR 7506. Even though Line6 recommends high impedance headphones, I have used these for almost 7 years now with no issues. But there are many other good studio quality headphones to choose from.

you will always need gearbox if you want to work with the tones on your x3... gearbox is the x3/xt editor

as a further note... a pod farm 2 license lets you get 2.5 for free...

BUT... you still don't get hardware independence unless you own the license...

if you are using the x3 supplied license... the x3 owns the license not you... and will always need to be plugged in to use pod farm (whichever version)

To clarify I don't have any other software but Line6 monkey. Also, "The hardware independent capability of Pod Farm was introduced with Pod Farm version 2.5" could you explain this? Does that mean if I buy pod farm 2.5 I don't need gearbox?

Yes - you need Gearbox to transfer tones to your X3.

Also, to clarify re: Pod Farm......

Your X3 includes (i.e. you don't need to pay for) a license for Pod Farm 1 Platinum, with a potentially free upgrade to Pod Farm 2.0 (or 2.1). With the X3 connected, run Line 6 Monkey and it will give you your upgrade options based on the licensing information that is stored in your X3.

The hardware independent capability of Pod Farm was introduced with Pod Farm version 2.5 - and it is not free. The information I provided earlier assumed you were using your free version of Pod Farm. If you have, or want to purchase, the hardware independent version of Pod Farm 2.5 then yes - what you quote above is applicable.

pod farm 2.5 is 100% the same sounds as gearbox... so from that aspect it's more or less the same...

it has a more "eye candy" interface that some prefer and some updates beyond the older gearbox:

support for more modern operatting systems

native 64bit plugin

enhanced midi control

hardware independence

elements (single effect or amp plugins rather than full instances)

and a few years wirth of misc bug fixes.

I think I understand what you're saying though. I need software to interact between my computer and the X3 which is gearbox. Pod farm just just a tone developer. So in order to get the tones from Pod farm to my X3 I would need gerabox correct?

Where is gearbox available to install if this is the case?

Gearbox is stiull available, and is the editor that you need for the X3. Pod Farm works as a plugin with the X3, meaning you use it inside your audio recording program - Pod Farm does not run standalone with the X3. Gearbox is the standalone program that you use to edit tones on your computer and transfer them to your X3 device.

Thanks for the input. What software do I mix tones on my computer with that is capable with my POD X3 live? I'm aware of gearbox but its no longer available. Were you able to load sounds from gearbox to the POD? I'm thinking of getting the tones on my computer and just loading them onto my POD. I tried mixing sounds directly on my POD but I found it quite annoying to work around.

Hi,

I've had a Pod x3 live and I just started looking at the potential this thing can do. I currently plug it into the PA system for when I play live but I want to start making my own tones. What do I use to practice and create my tones at home?

When I use my amp it always sounds different when plugged into the PA system. My amp is also near the end of its life so I'm looking at options to replace it. I want to stick with plugging directly into the PA system for live playing. Do I buy my own PA system for home? Or do I get a speaker with FRFR capabilities? basically I'm wondering what gear I need to get to practice and create my sounds at home so they sounds the same when I play on the stage? Also, for those late nights i'm wondering what to use for headphones or something for quiet playing?

I'm new to tweaking guitar effects so I'm not sure where to start. So if anyone had any pointers on where to start getting the sound I want that would be most helpful.
