Why do I need a DT amp if I'm playing through the PA?

Hi all,

Getting ready to start Christian a band with a bud. Was thinking the dream rig, but with costs a consideration, I'm wondering why not skip the DT25 and just get one of the Stagesource or similar PA cabs. That should give me clean electric and acoustic sounds without having to take an effect send out for the acoustic, right? So it solves a problem and saves money too. Right now, I'm planning to monitor onstage with in-ears; alternatively, I guess I'd have a floor monitor of some sort. So what does having the amp buy me? I'm not sure I need one.

BTW, I'll be running a HD PRo rack with a JTV-89US.

TIA,

Kevin

HD500: PA vs Studio Direct... a baseline?

Hey guys! I'm going to be soundchecking my tones thru the house PA at church tonight. It's a big church and a big PA. But I don't know what to expect from it. I've dialied in some tones that I like, and have played them via the studio out and headphones, as well as changing it to a Stack/Power Amp to reference thru my stereo 4x12 (in both stereo and mono too). The thing is, I don't have a GOB of confidence in our FOH guys. It depends on who it is. But

You'd think that if it sounds good via Studio Out, and it sounds good via Stack/Pwr Amp, that it would sound good thru the house. But does the burden to adjust fall on me, or the FOH guy? I shouldn't have to have some sort of "compensation reference" in my head when dialing in tones at home. If it sounds killer, then it should sound pretty killer thru the house right? I always hate it when you find that your awesome tone sounds like a chainsaw thru the FOH, or has way too much gain (less is more, I know), or high end, etc. My question is... is there anyway to establish a pretty good baseline for whether your tones are good or not? Because if I show up tonight early and soundcheck my tones... and find that they are WAY off from what it sounds like outfront... that will really throw me for a loop. I'm ok with making some adjusments. But doesn't it really fall on the sound guy to make his adjustments to get it sound right?

I mean, Lincoln Brewster has his tones dialed with his X3. You'd think that he gives it to him as he wants them, and makes THEM dial it in. He shouldn't have to constantly "guess" as to what will sound good. If it is good, then it should be good. I don't want to end up with "tones for church, and tones for everything else" if I can avoid it, because I won't truly know if they will sound good until I try it... which takes all the fun out of constructing sounds at home.

I guess I won't know until I hear the characteristics of the PA and room. But it would be nice to have an idea before hand! I've spent hours crafting the types of tones and sounds that I will likely use, and I would hate it if they were way off the mark. I'd be surprised. But I expect it, so there ya go. It's my luck.

Also, I'm assuming that I'll be feeding the PA mono. So, for Dual Amp tones.. the unit doesn't make those mono do they? It seems like when I tested this thru my 4x12 mono, only one of the two amps were there. I guess that means I'll have to change the panning to both be out of the Left side, right? Will this make stereo delays sound funny too? I'd have to think that it would. So I avoid stereo patches.

I guess I'll let you know how the soundcheck goes and what I discover. Should be interesting.

Adding an Expression Pedal to HD 500

I have ordered an expression pedal and I have a question. I may have already figured it out but...hey! Basically, I order the pedal so while I am working on new tones and such, my floor rig can sit up on my work space and I will have my volume pedal available on the floor. I use my volume pedal EXTENSIVELY. (expression pedal is cheaper than a new laptop, another story..)

My assumption is that, EXP 2 is used for volume and for parameter adjustments but not for wah. My reasoning for this is that the expression pedal doesn't have a toe switch so if a wah were assigned it would always be on and parked?

My next assumption is once I assign the new pedal to EXP 2-volume, I will essentailly be commited to it. Not a huge deal, but It will be one more thing to haul around and set up.

I am looking forward to using it in some cases to increase drive, and maybe an effects loop boost.

Have a glorious Thanksgiving all, as we look to Him as the reason for the season....Lots of Christmas tunes to brush up on and new ones to learn.

Blessings, Strato.

X3 revisited

I am an HD 500 user that has kept an X3 as a backup. There is a player with the youth group at our church that I have worked with on the subject of FXs. Right now he is using an old Zoom pedal and some stompboxes that he had garaged-saled. They work OK and it is MILES ahead of what I had at his age. I have talked to his dad about selling him my X3. To that end, I pulled it out and played through it this week. If I could design a rig, it would be HD amp models and X3 effects. In my opine the effects in the X3 are more clear, and easy to manipulate. For example, I practiced with "Today Is THe Day" by Paul B, using the old patches that I had developed on the X3 and the dotted eight stuff just jumps out of the rig!

It is there with the HD, but for some reason it comes out of the X3 like machine gun fire!

It seems like mods swirl more, timed rotos are easier to set up, parked wah.....

The Treadplate on the X3...nuff said. Maybe my ear is just acustomed to the HD and hearing the X3 is tantalizing.

Actually my wish list, HD500 with X3 effects, dual tone, HD screen and fuctionality so you can see all of the patches in a bank, and enough digital resource so you could literally turn everything in the rig on at once and there would be enough resource to handle it...Oh and a loudness switch and an off-on switch...I Build it and I will be in line to buy it....

I am intersted in he firmare upgarde in the HD. It sounds like they have adressed the Loudness contour stuff with the flat response function. Anybody downloaded it yet??

Blessings, Strato

And here is a heresy....

Ok guys we have all been playing guitar for quite a while and I want to know, what is the big deal about Lincoln Brewster? Great guitarist, yes, creepy old manish looking young, check , uses line 6 gear yes. But what about Tommy Walker, the David Crowder band guitarists, etc., there are a ton of amazing guitarist both electrical and acoustic in the Christian music scene, why does Lincoln dominate everything? I do appreciate his remakes, but why is he the standard? Or why do we want his patches so bad?

And to give poor Lincoln a break, why do we seek to be cover bands in church? Why don't we take song A by this artist or that and play our version? What my fear/perception/realization is that what differentiates us from the guys in the bar, is we say we are playing for G-d and are getting paid less than them. A cover band is a cover band

In no way am I wanting to sound high and mighty but since I have put the musical career on hold, no paying gigs, no wonderful recording sessions, and I am at a very old school church. I'm beginning to start that age old battle to bring new music in. Not only is the fight not in me, I'm questioning what parts are worth it. Do we lack our own creativity, an attribute given to us by our maker? Do we desire to make our own music relative to the specific congregation that sings praises to the Lord in our own colloquialisms? Or are we just a resounding gong?

and discuss, or rip me a new one
