What gear are you using...right now?

Howdy metallites. I thought this line of discussion could be interesting as I'm sure there are a variety of levels and experience of players in here. Also, if you have any comments on your gear and possible upcoming purchases that would be cool as well. I have been playing for MANY years, but have maintained a certain level that keeps me satisfied yet always pushing for more. My gear...right now:

1988 Jackson Strat USA (main)

2009 Douglas Strat Custom (scalloped neck!!); this is the new toy I'm playing constantly...

I have been using a Flextone II XL for years and love it. I have also spent years as the lone guitar player in the bands I have played in. I have recently begun playing in a band with two guitarists. At our first gig, I found that neither he nor my sound was transferring very well through the system. I run my left side through a 4x12 cabinet and the other is coming out of the right 12"--The side I mic. He is running a Marshal half-stack. Anyway, does anyone have maybe a solid setting or maybe an eq tweak I could use to cut through?

The Writing Process

My brothers and sisters in arms, I have a question for you all as metal musicians:

What is your writing process like?

This of course can stem out to how you get yourself inspired before a session, how you interact with your fellow musicians or bandmates, where you find your hands on your instrument - anything.

To me, it just seems something not often discussed since I'm sure we all do it so differently.

Personally, I'll admit that it's tough for me to get inspired to write something, but there's one place where it happens most - my car.

On a drive home, during my normal vehicular jam session, I'll hear something that'll stick out and make me think, "I need to write something at least fractionally as awesome".

From there, I get home and start play some scales and chords trying to get that "feel" that the lick from earlier gave me.

As a structure comes together, I invite my buddy Abe over to play some Bass and write a fullblown song.

I have no doubt that you ladies and gents have some more science to your method and I'm looking forward to hearing some of it. :]

For me, it was James Hetfield and the ...And Justice For All album. When it came out in 1988, I was 14 years old, and had just recently been introduced to the metal scene when my family moved and I had to switch to a different school. Man, I was immediately hooked, not only on metal, but on wanting to play the guitar. Back in those days, it seemed like James Hetfield was a god. My entire playing style emulated his, right down to the insane art of downpicking everything. Couldnt do that these days, lol, once I learned alternate picking I never looked back.

Here's a quick video of not just the MetaL Tones I've created, but how they sound in the overall mix with bass and drums. As we all know, it's fairly simple to quickly dial in a nice metal tone with the HD500 but dialing in something that fits with the mix of your specific music/songs can be a bit more challenging, at least for me it took a little time. In fact, I've tweaked these tones even more since this video was made so I'll be throwing up more videos for HD500 metal tones soon.

This is using the Treadplate amp and Treadplate cabinet with the 67 condenser mic. I used the Screamer for both rhythm and leads; the lead track has a bit more amp gain as well as some delay:

I don't know for sure, but it ISN"T Godsmack, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Five Finger Death Punch, or almost anything else on "Hard Rock" radio...I'm sick of having this conversation:

"You Play Metal? Thats cool, I love Godsmack and heavy stuff like that."

sorry for the short rant, it really irritates...next people are gonna tell that Janes Addiction is metal.

Is this enough metal for you Guy,s ?
