So I got bored and decided to decorate my Variax.

For sh**s and giggles, I added hand drawn paper pickups:

I also added a decal, which turned out actually really nice. It's Thrice's logo:

I've been tinkering on with Sustainers for a few months in my spare time ...as I have a few guitars & it'd have been cost prohibitive to have bought a Sustainer for them all - I'm now in the final throes of adding one to my Variax 500 ...& just wondered if there'd be any interest from others in such a beast?

One of the biggest problems with fitting sustainers, is power requirements & the complexity of fitting them to the guitar, I reckon I've addressed both issues...the power comes from the Variax, & this one of mine would be a fairly simple fit (about 5 wires to connect)

I made a short video a couple of weeks ago, which briefly outlines where I was at then (still in breadboard form, but soon will be a proper PCB - & no holes are necessary for the control switches...as I've devised a method to use the scratchplate screws as on/off touch sensor switches!

Variax 300 cuts out

I bought a Variax 300 used a few months ago and have been enjoying it, but recently, the signal has been cutting out. Sometimes it drops out altogether, other times, the volume slowly drops, distorts, then cuts out.

I've tried two different TRS cables, both of them less than 20' and that doesn't seem to make a difference. If I pull the cable out of the guitar and replace, sometimes the signal will come back...other times no signal...anyone had a similar problem?

Anyone ever notice how good the sustain is on a Variax? Since it has no magnetic pickups, that means there's no pull down force on the strings, so they'll vibrate as long as they naturally can.

I can get ebow sounds out of it if I have high enough gain.

i have a varix 700 ad after about 2 yeras of use i noticed a sound drop off when playing the low E, i thought it was a piezo problem and i changed it.

Now after 2 month with the new piezo sometimes the low E sound drop off again. The piezo is new, is it possible that the problem is somewhere else? or maybe is an electric problem that brake everytime the piezo on the low E?

please help... or i will burn a variax..

While the Variax is awesome, it misses just a couple essentials here and there, but I'm sure that's fixable with a little work in workbench right?

I thought we could discuss custom workbench presets of such here.

I was wondering if anyone has an SG-esque preset or knows how to make one. And SG is basically a Les Paul with just a little bit more bite. Any recipices in workbench to add that bite feel to a Les Paul model, or anything else?

needed obscure part for a Variax that has gone down on me. called on the outside chance that they might could help me source it.

Not only did they have one in stock, they are shipping it out to me. Never even asked for money or anything. A prt they really don't stock.

Just. wow.

Blown away by a company that would help a guy with a product thats not only out of support, but not even being made anymore.

Calibrate tone knob

The tone knob on my variax 500 rolls back down at the full setting. The attached post discusses calibrating the selector knob and seems to include calibrating the tone knob as well. If this is the correct procedure to calibrate the tone knob? If so, must all knobs (volume, tone and selector) be calibrated or can I just do the tone knob? I'd prefer not to mess with the ones that are working fine.

Just bought an older Variax - need info on power system

Do i need to purchase the line-6 power module or could i get by cheaper with a generic one ? What's the difference, and what specs should i look for in a generic ?
