Windows 7 - Dell Inspiron 1545 Upgrade - what next

Hi everyone
I'm running Windows 7 and Reaper on my Dell Inspiron laptop.
It has 3 USB ports - the UX8, mouse and musical keyboard take care of that, and I have an Expresscard with 2 USB ports and a Firewire port.
I was thinking the next step was an external hard drive / card to record the music directly on to, bypassing the hard drive of the machine.
Is this a good way to go?
What should I get to record on to, and connect via Firewire or USB. I'm thinking ideally a fast solid state card, that would probably have to be by USB. Either that or cheaper option standard SATA hard drive via firewire/USB.
I mostly record a track at a time, but got the UX8 cos I anticipate full band recording at some point in the next few months.

Cant you just record to the hard drive? Maybe I misunderstand but if you're going to bypass the machine just get a stand alone multi track recorder.
I use an external hd for all my music and games because I try to leave all the pc hard drive available to run the programs at top notch performance, so i say yeah grab an external and get going...how much hd does the laptop have?
jugadug,
Just what I was planning. Nice to hear it works for you.
The hard drive I have is 160Gb, so it's not a huge issue, but its funny how quickly you can fill that up!
I have a hard drive I can use in an external case, and I'm going to go ahead with that, once I break my 3 months off from recording that is. Now I have a pile of stuff to do!
