Does anyone have any halfway decent patches to share on customtone?

I tried every patch tonight on customtone, and they were all very crappy sounding in my 212 amp.  Nothing personal against their creaters, but either these were created on the HD100 with a closed back cab, there is something wrong with my amp (that would make this the second in a row), or my perception on good tone is WAAAYYY different than the rest of you guys.  I don't know......I really am considering just returning this thing and dial in some sounds on the X3L for running direct to the pa again until I find a different amp to try.  This thing is really not impressive at all so far.  Again, sorry if any of you are offended, but maybe this amp needs to get checked out, or something needs to change.....seriously!  This is ridonkulous!!

If it's a thinness issue you seem to keep having, (judging by your mentioning close backed HD100) ...I'd say it's likely a tube issue as this is one of the symptoms of a tube going bad.

Could be you've just had some bad luck ..and maybe third time will be a charm ..cuz I can tell you this amp definitely shouldn't be sounding thin at all ..that Diezel VH4 patch I made sounds thick and full as all get out and biting through my 4x12 ..I'm just not quite happy with the delay setting I have on it yet but I'm getting there.

If you've tried decreasing presence and treble and adding bass and mids ...for better low end and it still sounds thin ..I'd say something is definitely wrong.

It's gota be the tubes ...I've played through a valve king too ..nice amp and not too expensive ..but not as versatile.

I hope the tube replacement gets you the thickness or punch you're looking for ...because the issue you keep bringing up is this thin sounding problem ...and there shouldn't be a thinness at all ..unless, like I said, you've got a bad tube somewhere.

I'll be interested to get your take on what you think of the amp, if it was a tube issue, once you get this issue resolved.

You had to crank the bass???

Hmmm ... it must be the V30's ..I know they emphasize upper mids ...and sound brighter ...you may be happier with different speakers.

I have the equivilant of G12T - 75 ... fuller sounding so I need to increase presence a bit but get lotsa bottom end.

And after turning up amp a bit on my patch I decreased gain a bit and kept delay where it is I like it now. Just couldnt tell if it was gona sound good loud ..but I like the delay when cranked.

Ya I still gotta sell some of my older stuff to pay for my new stuff too.

I dunno I love the way the new firmware sounds .. to me it is tighter, bottom isn't as boomy at louder volumes ..and notes are more distinct without having to keep turning up ..even with mid scooped tones.

Maybe it is the cab design that's not pushing bottom punchiness and creating highs you don't like because of the open back combined with V30's?

Not sure new tubes will help that ... but who knows ..I just know I like how my 4x12 sounds with it.

    Hi metalhd77

No worries.  No offence taken.  All comments are taken as they are meant - in a constructive way.  We have had NO presets uploaded for the SV MkII yet by Line 6.  It's only been a few days since the firmware was released.  I did put a feature request in for Spider IV Artist and Song presets to be ported across to the SV MkII or for a software converter that would handle the transfer to .sve format.  maybe if everyone else did the same we might get something like that.  I have just tried to help people out who had asked for some of the Spider IV presets by re-creating some of them from comparing my Spider IV 150 settings in Spider IV Edit with Spider Valve Mk II Edit.

I put quite a few presets up on Custom Tone yesterday.  Apart from about three which are entirely my own - and created before the update, but uploaded after the update, all I have done is to try and quickly re-create some of the Spider IV factory presets by manually transposing the settings from Spider IV Edit into Spider Valve MkII Edit.  The settings are exactly as in the Spider IV, which is not going to necessarily mean they sound the same as the Spider IV versions.  I deliberately didn't use the exact same preset names as in the Spider IV for two reasons: 1) I didn't want to mislead anyone into mistaking these for official Line 6 versions, which if they are ever released would obviously be tweaked here and there by L6, and ; 2) potential copyright issues.   I have listened to the presets I created at quite low volume levels on my new Spider Valve 212 MkII against the same presets in my Spider IV 150 combo, and there are definitely some differences in EQ in quite a few, so I would not be at all surprised if you do feel you need to tweak further.  Whilst I have spent several hours comparing and creating these presets on the Spider Valve MkII, I really haven't spent ages listening to them and comparing them with original studio album recordings, and that's almost certainly what needs to happen.  What these presets should do though is to put you approximately in the right ball park with amp models and FX - that is assuming the Spider IV versions were reasonably accurate in the first place, which again I can't be 100% certain of.  It's all subjective.

I put up quite a few tones in a relatively short space of time and had I been able to add a short note to each, I would have liked to make it clear exactly where each preset originated - i.e. as a Spider IV preset with settings manually transferred to the SV MkII editor.

So, what I'm saying here, is don't necessarily blame your amp for the excess treble and lack of bottom end in any of the presets I created.  I appreciate that the sounds you're hearing may go against what you're expecting and that's fair comment. Don't necessarily blame me either though LOL  .

The only three true originals amongst my uploaded presets are: Suntanna - which is just a quick take on Sarlos Santana's sound circa 1976 when he used Yamaha SG series guitars on the Europa album and tour and are my take on the lead sound of the title track with a Yamaha SG1000 as the guitar I used; Roisin Dubh (Black Rose) which is pre-set up based on a +3 harmony on G major for the track of the same name by Thin Lizzy (need to click Stomp to activate the harmony) with Gary Moore on guitar - I Googled for what I could find on Gary Moore's apparent amp settings - so it's likey that the whole tone setup and drive settings etc... could well be in line for some further tweaking; Detune -1 - which is nothing more than an experiment to see how well the pitch-glide effect copes with dropping the tuning of the guitar a half step and Insane Blue.   Make of these what you will.  You either like them or you don't

I just noticed BTW that on Custom Tone the amp models for the SV MkII are named as Red and Green rather than Amber and Blue - not a big deal but slightly misleading maybe.

Because of the inevitable differences in the architecture between the Spider IV and the Spider Valve MkII plus what seems to be the general consensus that the amp modelling changes made by Line 6 in the latest SV firmware update have left the bottom end lacking - and by their own admission they have stated that this is deliberate so that the amp could be 'opened up' at higher volumes with more gain and more headroom.  I also noticed that straight away with the latest firmware update as soon as i applied it, but as my amp is so new to me, I had thought it might just be my ears.

The amp models in the SV MkII and the Spider IV should be essentially very similar, but the SV versions will inevitably have been pre-tweaked for the valve amp and the Spider IV versions will have been tweaked for the solid state amp and the differences in speakers used in the two amps.  I guess this is partly the reason for the Spider Valve amps being marker Amber and Blue and on the Spider IV the equivalents are Red and Green.  I have assumed for the purposes of what I did that Amber is equivalent to Red and Blue is the equivalent of Green - well that's all I could do.  It doesn't necessarily mean that Amber is a direct setting for setting equivlalent to Red on the Spider IV and the same is true for the Blue/Green comparison.

Given that my versions of any Spider IV presets may (and probably do) sound extra toppy with bottom end lacking, it is entirely possible that you may want to tweak bass and treble to make them sound better on the SV MkII or you might just want to put a Boss GE-7 EQ or similar in the loop to compensate for now.  But if anyone else wants to re-edit any of the presets I have created from the Spider IV originals, I wouldn't be at all offended - go for it.  I have simply tried to start the ball rolling.  When better versions come along I'll happily delete the ones I created from Custom Tone.

Also, I don't know if you are aware, but when the latest Spider IV Infusion update was first released some people noticed anomalies in how the amp sounded, which were quickly confirmed by Scott Waara of Line 6 and which resulted in the 1.51 firmware update being pulled and replaced a couple of days later with a revised version 1.52.  I don't think they would have made the same mistake again with the new firmware for the SV MkII, but it is always possible that not all the changes to the amp models are quite how everyone would have liked them.

I saw that Scott Waara recommended saving presets then doing a full factory reset following the update and then re-applying the presets.  I have not done this yet.

Anyhow, now it's daylight here in the UK and now that people are awake, I can turn my amps up slightly more and compare the SV MkII versions the Spider IV presets a little better.  Seriously if anyone wants to tweak and re-upload any of the presets I have quickly knocked up so far, please feel free to go ahead.  I'm not precious about stuff like that.

    Nick

    Edit:

I have now had a bit of a chance to check the presets I created using Spider IV settings audibly against the originals in the Spider IV having first performed a factory reset, reloading my bundle and then comparing.   I have to say that to my ears, there's not a huge difference in what I'm hearing generally, although the Spider Valve MkII 212 I'm using does sound a touch brighter.  That said the Spider IV 150 has always sounded less full and a bit more spiky than the Spider III 150 to me.  It was quite evident when I first got my Spider IV in an A/B comparison preset for preset with my Spider III, but an early firmware update addressed a lot of that.   I always find the noise gate a bit gritty and usually turn it off just leaving Noise Reduction on which helps sustain.  Another major tone affecting difference between the Spider IV and Spider Valve MkII is that the SV has a Presence control which makes quite a big difference to how everything sounds of course.  I usually (and historically with my SV 112 MkI) always set this to about 12 'o' clock or sometimes a bit less which takes off the edge quite a bit.   My SV 212 MkII is a day or so older than yours in terms of use and I doubt that either amp has been fully exercised in the wild at high volumes, so you have to take into account that your amp's speakers like mine have not yet been broken in fully - usually takes about 30 hours of playing at higher volumes - or about ten rehearsals.  Swapping out the pre-amp valves seems to have made a difference to your amp from what you say - I haven't done this yet - and I haven't felt the need to so far, but I do have some decent ECC83 valves here that I may try later.   Maybe your amp's power tubes are incorrectly biased having been knocked out of whack in transit - SpaceATL says that the SV 112's stock bias pots as were originally in his amp were quite touchy when trying to adjust them, so he has created a mod where he now has accessible bias points on the back of his amp as well as new better quality pots mounted on the back of the chassis - he says he checks the bias before every performance (because he can) and says it's quite surprising how different the actual bias is depending on the slight variations in input voltage at different locations, so that might also be relevant to you.  Your amp might be biased a bit cold which is better for the life expectancy of the tubes but not necessarily for your tone.  Personally I won't touch JJ power tubes as I've had more than one bad experience with the brand and have a low opinion of them on the basis of quality, but that may just have been bad luck - twice!.  As Scott Waara said in another post we probably do need to tweak our own presets to re-discover the sweet spots as the new update will definitely change how they sound.

Happy tweaking and hope you canm make this second amp sing for you
