Using midi you theoretically can assign a measure with a time signature, then your Maximum note division, then assign a Midi Note to each of your individual "Drum instruments. ie: Snare"
Then you can use a Piano roll to "Write" your pattern!

I agree, your description of how to write midi for drums is spot on. My problem is I want to play guitar, not write drum parts. When I have attempted to write midi, I found it very tedious, probably because I really didn't want to have to do it to start with. Thanks for the info Looney!
