Naff Switch Washer on 59 - My Fix
-

I, like many on this forum, was unhappy with the ill-fitting washer on the 3-way switch of the 59. An 18mm diameter washer in a 20mm diameter recess - c'mon Line 6, that's just taking the mickey
I was impressed with the guy who fitted a Les Paul style switch plate but, to my eyes, it shouted Gibbo a bit too much.
I found a fibre washer on ebay with the following dimensions - 20mm OD, M12 bore, 1mm thick. Perfect fit.
Painted it up cream with a bit of car touch-up paint I had and whacked it on.
I think it looks quite sophisticated and way better than before. Also, very reversible.
Also changed the black tip for a cream one.

That looks great ![]()
Very nice. But of course it is a little too white. Matching the cream colour would make it even more perfect.
Line 6 should be providing a cream washer themselves. It is ridiculous that each customer has to deal with this individually.
The glare from the camera flash has made it look a lot whiter than it actually is.
It is a lot closer to the cream of the pup rings than appears.
Having said that it's not spot on and I'll be searching for a closer match of paint at the weekend.
Will post further pics soon
looks great, man! please make detailed photos of the body finish!
thx, vjclaus
+1
I agree. Great job Phil - it looks really nice - but you really should not have had to do it. IMO, Line6 should have provided the correct colour switch tip and the correct sized washer to go with their new completely redesigned switch.
I agree 1000%
thx for the pictures, i love them

Do you know, does anybody has experience with pickupchange on the jtv59?

I have Slash signature alnico pro II's in my Slash les paul.... very nice pups.
when I get my JTV59 I will change the pickups... I'm about to buy the pups, and am just waiting for someone who already has their JTV to measure whether I'll need standard or F spacing (trem bucker) pickups for the JTV. I'm thinking of a duncan custom in the Bridge, or maybe a dimarzio Air zone... and then a matching either 59 in the neck, or humbucker from hell.

I'm pretty sure David (Ozbadman) has changed the pickups on his '59. ![]()

i have also the gibson slash signature custom shop 2004 guitar, there are the Seymour duncan Alnico Pro II APH-1 and the TBAPH-1 inside, i´d like to change the jtv59 pickup with the Seymour duncan alnico APH-2

Hey Nick (sorry, been away - just got back),
Yes, and no. I fitted new pickups to see if they'd fit, and unwired the old pickups, but had the switch problem so had to send it in to Line 6. I put the old pickups back in to ensure everything was the way they expected and nothing would get lost along the way. I never actually wired in the new pickups, just fitted them. However, I did look at how to do it, and I've had a quick look on the new switch as well. The wiring for the pickups is on a small circuit board attached to the 3-way switch and is therefore in the switch cavity. The wires route to the cavity easily enough. On the old switch each pickup had two wires connected to the circuit board, with the shielding and one leg joined together into one hole, and the other end into the other hole. I would imagine it's important to get the shielding into the right hole, and that the two pickups are wired the same way around (unless you want them phase cancelling for some reason). On the new switch, it still looks like two holes on a circuit board per pickup.
Don't know if that helps you or not Andy.
Cheers,
David.
Keep in mind that the magnetic pickups go through analogue to digital conversion for the VDI (channel 2). If you replace the pickups you may end up with a mismatch of output. The A/D circuit will be designed for the output from the standard pickups. If the replacement pickup output is too high it could cause clipping. Even if it doesn't clip, the different output levels (higher or lower) will result in an imbalance of the levels between the magnetic pickups and the modelling going through the VDI.
Cheers,
Crusty
I dunno. The white washer definitely jumps out at me. But I think you should just leave it and enjoy the guitar for a bit. I imagine that eventually, when and if Line 6 gets their **** together, they will be able to send you a properly matching cream washer and tip so that you can replace the ones you are using now.
Gotta say if my new 20 hour or less 59 guitar comes back looking less than this nice or has crap work or worse I am going to raise some serious HELL. WHT this experience is BS. Hey love the post and improv. Your fixes are great to say the least but Line 6 get your head out of your $ss and give us the fixes we deserve or eat this failure give me my $1300. Your QA dev does not suck- it does not exist obviously. So you L6 can not even make us wait another couple mths and get a good fitting switch -what an investment this is can't wait to leave this to my son! pretty sad stuff....
