POD X3 Live with live setup

I would like to get some feedback on how others run their X3 Live in a live setup environment and what works and does not work for you:

I am evaluating my setup and what works best....

 

- Setup connections?

- Amps or straight to FOH or mix of both?

- Other pedals?

- Cable types and configuations?

- X3 Live amp models/effects?

- How it's mixed in FOH with EQ's and/or with amps/cabs?

 

Etc, etc. - thanks

    I mostly play at our church and we run direct to the mixing desk/PA.

    No amps.

     

    X3L  ->  XLR out  ->  Mix/PA.

     

    Sound Tech crew takes it from there!

    POD X3 Live -> Tapco 100 mixer -> FOH Desk

     

    The Tapco mixer between the POD and FOH ives me a basic global EQ whic is handy for adjustments needed for the venue and playing volume (Fletcher Munson).

     

    I use the Tapco mixer because it has 2 XLR inputs and the lines out on the Tapco are balanced (TRS) for the run to the main desk.  I can take a send from the FOH and route that to the Control Room output on the Tapco and use the Control Room out to feed a powered monitor (so I can have drums and bass coming from the desk going to the tape in and routing that to control room - not the main mix) and have my POD output direct from the Tapco.

     

    Works for me this way.

     

    Having the small mixer is also great when doing guitar/vocal duos in small venues.  Simple straight into mixer and out to powered speakers, no need for monitors.

      Here's mine:

       

      Tone 1: Acoustic Guitar and Violin: Direct outs - > FOH

      Tone 2: Electric Guitar : Line outs - > tube amp - > mic'd cabinent

       

      I love that with this unit you can route your acoustic and violins through one input/output and route a second input/output to a cabinet.

       

      I used to try to hand over my tone to FOH for electric but I found most of the time they couldn't bring it to life the same way a cab on stage + mic'd + FOH could. If you have a BOMB FOH engineer maybe its worth trying. In my case, most FOH engineers are more used to mixing with stage noise. Isolating everything, monitoring with in-ears, piping everything through the mains, made for some weird mixes... at least not as tasty as running through a cabinet.

      Once you send it from the Tapco to FOH, are they kinda remixing the eq again for the mains?

      Do you prefer using the TRS out to FOH instead of the XLR outs?

        I use the XLR outs on the POD to the XLR ins on the Tapco.

         

        The Tapco outputs are TRS not XLR only the mic inputs are XLR.  It doesn't matter the output is balanced and that's what matters.  The type of plug on the end really doesn't make any difference.  As long as the FOH accepts balanced inputs with a TRS connection you're fine.  Otherwise (and I do have these) carry 2 TRS (female) to XLR (male) adapters in your cable bag.

         

        They can do whatever they want with the EQ at the FOH.  I just know that if I'm going low volume, I am going to want to put a little more top and bottom into the output.  Normally, it's just all left at unity and dealt with out front.  It's more just the convenience of having a basic global EQ for the POD there.

          Crusty,

          Thanks.... you always have great, specific and easy to understand answers.

          Do you send "full output volume" to FOH, since we have the option on the X3 to control ALL, 1/4, or XLR only with the master volume?

          Do you use the "guitar pad" on the X3 or just leave it off?

          Do you find without the Tapco mixer your overall sound lacking at FOH?

           

          I find sometimes that the mix in the house is thin even though my patches are pretty robust - I am wondering if our sound techs are pulling out lows or mids in the house mix....

    I've never do a live with my X3 (I have it from 3 days!!)

    But I will use it in this way:

    Guitar -> X3 Live -> Input Amp..

    And from "System" I select "Combo Front" or "Stack Front", then I use the EQ of the Amp too

    old thread but thought it might be useful to someone.  Bought a pod for recording way back when and only recently tried it live.  Went direct to a clubs pa system and it sounded AMAZING.  So much so I canned buying a new hd500.  I may use a cheap amp as a monitor next time but the sound was great running directly.

     

    I also did direct to PMP 6000 board at a outdoor show and it also sounded great.

    No stock tones though.  I make tones specifically for loud playing and test them loud.  That is the trick.

      I use a Blues Driver along with my POD x3 live. So this is how my set up goes

       

      Guitar --- Boss BD2--- PODx3 live ------- PA

       

      What doesnt work for me at times is the onstage monitor. Every place I perform they gv me a diffrent amp  so my onstage sound keeps on changes. Thts why i prefer not to have an on stage amp rather use a PA monitor for on stage monitoring
