HD400 aux/mp3 input too quiet coming from a laptop pc

I'm running my laptop into the aux in with the volume on the laptop turned to full blast. I'm coming from the laptop's headphone output.
I'm using guitar pro for practicing.
All my patches are too loud compared to the laptop's audio. Is there anything I can do other than run my laptop signal through a headphone amp before going into the HD400?
Try connecting your Pod HD400 to your computer via usb, and setting the HD400 as your computer's soundcard:

(Instructions for other operating systems are available in the same docs directory)
With this setup you do not need to connect the laptop output to the HD400 input - the usb connection handles that. Then you can adjust the HD400 monitor level in your Line 6 Audio/MIDI device control panel.
http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-4601
That will reduce the relative level of the Pod's audio output to your laptop audio output. Hopefully you will be able to achieve a balance with sufficient overall volume using the HD400 Master Volume setting (on the back panel of the HD400).
EDIT: The strikethrough text was wrong information. The control panel does not affect the HD400 volume direct to its outputs. It affects the volume of the input signal from the HD400 being monitored by your computer.
Ok I got it connected through usb without using an audio cable at all. I still have the headphones plugged into the HD400. Unfortunately, nothing I do on the laptop changes the level of the hd400. I can even mute all sound and I still hear my guitar at the same volume. On the laptop under recording devices I do see the HD400 and can see the green bar go up and down when I play, but I can even disable the hd400 for recording and still hear the guitar. The guitar -> headphones volume isn't reliant on the laptop apparantly.
I tried turning the hd400 to live mode rather than studio and it's queiter but sounds really bad. For now I'm setting my volume pedal post effects and just rocking it back a bit, but I'm still hopeful there's another solution.

You're right - sorry I gave you poor direction in my earlier post. I'll edit and correct that.
To balance the levels you can turn down the preset volume (not the HD400 Master volume) and/or turn up the output volume in your laptop application.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
